I worked as research assistant in a biochemistry lab at Louisiana State University with Dr. Sue Bartlett. We are mapping the genetic structure of lipoxygenases (LOX's), iron-containing dioxygenases that catalyze the hydroperoxidation of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. LOX's have been found in many animals, plants, a species of fungi, and in some prokaryotes. In order to map LOX's, mutations are made within the DNA structure in order to ascertain the enzyme activity of the different LOX's. My primary responsibility is to mutate the DNA structure and implant the genome into viable E.Coli for future testing.
