The two stand-out themes of my career are environmental science and education. I graduated from McMaster University with a degree in Biology and Environmental Science. After a few years of working in environmental science in Alberta for Alberta Parks and the Helen Schuler Nature Center, I pivoted toward education. I had started my own business teaching math and followed that impulse to continue teaching and impacting lives in a direct and meaningful way. Later, I took on teaching ESL, which I continued when my family moved to Quebec. I later completed the Environmental Management and Assessment program at Algonquin College and began subcontracting for Arktis Piusitippaa Inc. providing consultant support on various projects with a goal to protect Inuit interests and advance Inuit self-determination, including environmental stewardship, socioeconomic factors, and traditional knowledge (Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit). I enjoyed learning more about the arctic environment in the Nunavut region of Inuit Nunangat and Inuit culture and values. To continue supporting Inuit interests and advance my learning, I recently accepted a new position with Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami as a Senior Policy Advisor. I'm excited to learn more about policy advancement and the ways we can strategically impact outcomes beginning with policy. I will be working on files involving both education and environment, bringing to fruition the two themes of my winding career path. I am interested in the overlap between human and natural land use, so-called ecosystem services, and understanding how we can maximize the benefit of human-nature interactions. As a teenager I remember feeling like I had to choose whether I wanted to work to help people or the environment. Through my career doing one and then the other, I've come full circle to realize that they are one and the same, and we can support both by advancing First Nations, Metis, and Inuit interests and self-determination. My other interests include regenerative agriculture, low-impact design and sustainable drainage, re-wilding, and greening urban spaces. I enjoy spending time on farms, working in my garden and with animals, spending time with my family hiking and camping, and doing craft projects at home.

Private Esl TeacherFreelance Jan 2019 - Sep 2022OnlineLearning English is challenging. I bring a fun, relaxed approach to language learning that is communication-based and focused on giving students the opportunity to practice speaking as much as possible. I provide all of the learning materials, including notes and additional exercises for clients to study outside of class. We use a variety of learning formats, including reading, writing, and listening. Grammar is important, but we also take plenty time for things like idioms and expressions, situational language, and special topics. All classes are individualized, so I can focus on whatever is the most important to client goals.Students do not need any prior experience learning English. Because my method is communicative, I am able to teach beginner students without any need for me to speak the student's native language. It's important for a student to feel comfortable to experiment and continue trying, so I create a welcoming and supportive learning space. I believe that language is feeling, so I make sure that students understand the feeling and essence of the grammar, vocabulary, and expressions, so they can speak English like a native and have a better understanding when listening and reading.

Math TutorFreelance May 2013 - Sep 2022Through my independent business, I teach math up to grade 11, and many other courses and topics on a case-by-case basis. I have experience tutoring certain sections of college level math, as well as helping mature students or students with learning disabilities with organizational help, study and testing strategy. My success in tutoring hinges on my strong communication skills and creativity. I enhance the learning experience by explaining difficult topics in creative ways. I am very personable and help the student to feel comfortable to make mistakes and to be put on the spot for answers. I believe student success, especially in academically struggling students, is to conceptualize the information to make it understandable and memorable.
