About Caleb Mcclennen, Ph.D.

With over 25 years of experience in environmental policy, climate change, and conservation, I am passionate about leading programs and operations that deliver on Rare's organizational mission of inspiring change so people and nature thrive. As the President of Rare, I partner with the CEO to develop and execute Rare's strategy and organizational governance, focusing on equity, communities, and the power of individuals and communities to deliver solutions at scale.Before joining Rare, I served as a Vice President with the Wildlife Conservation Society's Global Conservation Program, where I supported and led cross-cutting initiatives to tackle the challenges of oceans, climate, livelihoods, and markets. I have launched and managed several strategic multi-institutional partnerships and new initiatives, such as the Shark Conservation Fund, the Local Conservation Partners Fund, and the MPA Fund. In addition, I have served as an Adjunct Faculty at Columbia University's School of Public and International Affairs, teaching courses on international environmental policy and sustainable coastal economies. I hold a PhD and a Master's degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and a Bachelor's degree from Middlebury College.

Rare focuses on equity, communities and the power of individuals to deliver solutions at scale.  Lead on the development and execution of Rare’s strategy and organizational governance In partnership with Rare’s CEO. Prior to joining Rare, Caleb served as a Vice President with WCS' Global Conservation Program across oceans, climate, health, livelihoods, and WCS’ core global strategy to conserve Nature’s Strongholds – the planet’s last remaining intact and biodiverse places. Over his career at WCS, Caleb lead a range of partnerships and launched a range of new initiatives including the Local Conservation Partners Fund, End the Trade, Wild For All, 50 Reefs/Vibrant Oceans, the Shark Conservation Fund and The MPA Fund.

Caleb also served as Adjunct Faculty at Columbia University’s School of Public and International Affairs, and serves as board member of the Woods Hole Sea Education Association, an advisor to the New England Aquarium Marine Conservation Action Fund, and a board member of the Great Barrier Reef Foundation's Resilient Reefs Project. Caleb previously served for over 8 years as the Executive Director of WCS' Marine Conservation portfolio, quadrupling its size and impact. He has spent over ten years at sea and abroad as an Environmental Advisor to the Republic of the Marshall Islands, a GIS analyst and marine scientist with Woods Hole Sea Education Association. Caleb holds an undergraduate degree from Middlebury College in Environmental Studies and Geography and a master’s and PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in International Environmental Policy and Development Economics.
