Profile bio

About Cj Cameron

As a historian of Latin American political and ethnic violence, I study the commission and resolution of human rights abuses across Latin America during the late 20th century. While my academic work as a doctoral candidate in the Georgetown University Department of History considers the transitional justice process in Peru following the ~25 year Internal Armed Conflict, my other research and interests lie in the development of political and ethnic conflict across all of Latin America. In 2022, I used a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Award to do oral history research in Spanish and Quechua among the population of Ayacucho Province, Peru with a special focus on reconciliation efforts in a small town called Quinua, site of the 1824 Battle of Ayacucho. Since returning to the United States, I've been doing archival research and writing full-time. Before beginning my PhD at Georgetown, I completed my Master's in Global, International, and Comparative History, also at Georgetown. During that period, I focused mainly on comparing the transitional justice and prosecutorial processes in Chile, Argentina, and Peru. As an undergraduate student at Claremont McKenna College, I studied the development of war crimes and crimes against humanity law at the international level. The inspiration for all of my work and professional interests comes directly from the time I was fortunate enough to spend in Guasmo Sur, a barrio in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where I have lived on and off since 2010. Working in Guasmo Sur with the 501(c)3 Adopta Una Familia instilled a fundamental respect for the most marginalized members of Latin American society, a passion for human rights work, and fluency in Spanish. In 2023, I became a member of the Board of Directors at Adopta Una Familia. I believe it is the duty of the more fortunate members of our society to work for justice, equity, and equality, and I'm thrilled to get to spend my academic, professional, and personal life doing just that.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Writing, Research, Leadership, and 28 others.
