Since joining the firm, I have been fortunate to work on a wide variety of challenging personal injury cases with some of the finest PI attorneys in New York City. I served as the Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Andrew F. Szefi at the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas (Fifth Judicial District of Pennsylvania) in the Civil Division for one year.My job role varied but typically included:- performing various legal research and writing;- drafting orders, opinions, jury instructions and other documents;- reviewing motions, appeals, petitions, pleadings and correspondence;- attending hearings and other legal proceedings;- contacting attorneys to obtain case documents and schedule proceedings;- maintaining case notes for the judge and tracking status of cases;- responding to inquiries from court personnel, attorneys and others concerning procedures, schedules and cases;- serving as a liaison between the judge and various offices and attorneys; and- performing related work as assigned, and assisting the judge in administering/overseeing all judicial matters - including both bench and jury trials.My employment came to an end upon expiration of my F-1 (OPT) visa.

Whilst part of the Commercial Property Team and with the support and experience of more senior colleagues, I developed experience in drafting missives, LBTT Returns, Lease Reports, Title Reports, Minute of Variations, various Advance Notices and fee notes/inputs - amongst other documents. Other areas of drafting experience pertained to reviewing various copies of dispositions, as well as frequent use of both Registers of Scotland and First Scottish ie Multi-Search Reports including Property Enquiry Certificates.

As a member of the Energy Team, I was fortunate to work on a wide variety of cases with global companies which necessitated a substantial amount of legal research ie in relation to New York state law - specifically in relation to the legal structure of businesses - as well as general commercial law advice in Mongolia. One of many highlights in the Team involved an internal presentation to the firm on the role hydrogen will play moving forward in the energy industry. This was coupled with encouraging feedback on my work from colleagues. I have also attended several presentations from OGUK to further my knowledge of the industry. These pertain to areas such as the focus on energy transition, the associated impacts and opportunities as well as additional OGUK content. Substantial time has also been dedicated to researching and understanding developing carbon capture storage technology and how this may effect the UK energy market moving forward.I also had exposure to elements in the Corporate Team, specifically drafting/proofreading several NDAs and MOUs for clients, as well as analysing various JOAs and identifying legal discrepancies - such as withdrawal provisions and voting rights.

During my time in the Dispute Resolution Team, I worked on a significant number of cases with colleagues. One of my roles involved managing several debt recovery cases on behalf of clients, completing and submitting claims to the court, serving court papers, calling debtors seeking payment, taking payment and managing expenses.I have also had the opportunity to appear in the Aberdeen Sheriff Court on numerous occasions for Simple Procedure cases, largely those which involve another instructing solicitor. Several of these cases ranged from Joint Motions to Opposed Motion Hearings. More generally, my time in this Seat has enabled me to participate in multiple meetings with clients, draft numerous legal documents, attend CPD conferences out-with the city, conduct various legal research, liaise with both counsel and clerks, as well as gaining greater exposure to arbitration.

In October of 2018, I was trained by Camp America as one of their regional interviewers to help recruit applicants for their program. This typically involved interviewing Scottish candidates whilst aiding the visa process. I also managed the IT system and helped guide applicants through their application.Every applicant would meet with myself for an hour long interview so I could ascertain their strengths and decide if they were a good fit for the programme. Following the interview, I would then complete a comprehensive report detailing the questions and answers given in the interview, as well as my overall opinion on the applicant's performance, which was then uploaded to Camp America for further review. I generally tried to work this part-time job around my full-time job as a Trainee Solicitor at Stronachs. This allowed me to keep in touch with an organisation that I have had a long association with, as well as helping other individuals experience a summer away working in the USA.

In 2019, I worked my sixth and final summer at Camp Allegheny and my third summer spent as a member of the Senior Leadership team. During this time, I further refined my leadership ability in evaluating staff performance, providing feedback, building trust and achieving the balance between delegating tasks and leading by example.

In 2018, I again took on the role as Village Leader at Camp Allegheny. The camp’s dynamics had changed substantially from the previous summer - and now there was only one male village as opposed to two, headed by myself.This second summer in a leadership position allowed me to practice and hone my leadership, problem-solving and decision-making skills, in supporting a small international team of counselors with a focus on good communication proving critical. I would be in constant communication with my direct supervisor, the Camp Director, reviewing circumstances and ensuring the effective working of the village, while also supporting and guiding my staff.Practical challenges included dealing with severe weather conditions, child welfare issues, as well as the day-to-day coordination and oversight of all activities involving 15 staff and 70 children within the village.

In 2017, I was given further leadership responsibility in the role of Village Leader. Due to this role, I was a member of the Senior Leadership Team - one of only 10 staff members and the only non-American employee.I had direct responsibility for a team of 14 counselors with supervisory responsibilities in all aspects. This opportunity allowed me to build on previous experience. I now had oversight for all elements within my "village" and supported the camp’s direction, as well as balancing this with the responsibility to evaluate staff performance, provide feedback and build trust whilst achieving the balance between delegation and responsibility as a manager.

In 2016, I was given enhanced camp leadership responsibility as Assistant Village Leader for the welfare of over 100 children on a weekly basis, as well as the supervision and management of 12 staff. Through this, I was able to maximise learning opportunities through the development of transferable skills such as leadership, decision-making, problem solving and inter-personal skills. As a result of my strong performance, I was offered a Senior Leadership role as Village Leader for the following summer in 2017.

In 2015, I was given a similar counselor role but with added informal leadership responsibilities for both young people and other counselors. During my work I dealt with various emergency situations, which necessitated significant personal problem solving abilities in complex and challenging situations. At the end of the summer, I was recognised by Village Leadership as having made “outstanding” contributions through my employee evaluation.

In 2014, I experienced my first work placement at an American residential summer camp as a Senior Counselor at the age of 18. Notably, I was the youngest international staff member at the time.My role resulted in direct responsibility for the welfare of dozens of American children across a two month period whilst operating closely with, and living with, two other co-counselors. Many of the children under my supervision came from very challenging and underprivileged backgrounds. The summer was fraught with long working hours, coupled with significant responsibility for the welfare and wellbeing of the campers. This work enabled me to gain an appreciation for the importance of personal initiative, enhanced communication and team working skills; all whilst working abroad in a different cultural setting for the very first time.
