Field BiologistThe Leatherback Trust Oct 2019 - Mar 2020Costa Rica· Worked alongside a team of 7 at the Goldring-Gund Marine Biology Station to monitor the population of nesting sea turtles in Las Baulas National Park in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. · The nests of leatherback, olive ridley and green turtles were monitored during night patrols and morning census walks.· Night patrols were conducted 5 nights per week for a period of 6 hours per night.· Morning walks were conducted 2 times per week over the course of 2-3 hours.· Data collection entailed tagging nesting females with metal flipper tags and PIT tags, taking morphometric measurements of nesting turtles, relocating vulnerable nests and recording observations of clutches and hatchlings. · Daily tasks included hatchery maintenance and monitoring, checking nest temperatures and thermal profiles, triangulating in situ nests, and excavating hatched nests.· Short term volunteer groups were educated on sea turtle conservation, trained on relevant protocols, and supervised during monitoring activities. · Outreach activities were done occasionally to educate the public on sea turtle conservation and to fundraise for The Leatherback Trust. -
