A social science post-doctoral fellow with the Cognitive, Behavioral, Affective, and Social Science team in the Office of the Chief Scientist at the Environmental Defense Fund: I use my social science training to conduct research into questions such as what environmental issues do people care most about, what motivates different people, how to encourage people to behave in pro-environmental ways, and how do people understand (and misunderstand) science communication.

As a Technical Trainer, my job was to prepare the next group of Peace Corps Trainees (soon-to-be Volunteers) for their 2 years of Peace Corps service in the Community Economic Development (CED) sector.Preparation included one month of planning technical sessions, field excursions, and identifying community resources.Trainees then arrived for 10 weeks of intensive Pre-Service Training (PST). For the CED sector, I led sessions on working with Paraguayan youth and community groups, small business development, civic participation, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, leadership development, and fomenting employability skills and vocational skills (including IT).In these technical sessions, I incorporated practice working with community members and host families, field practice visiting current Volunteers, and topical Spanish and Guarani vocabulary, in coordination with language professors.

Paraguay

After 3 months of in-country Pre-Service Training, I worked in a rural community in southwestern Paraguay for 2 years. As an Environment Volunteer, my projects mainly focused on environmental education in the elementary school, organic farming and gardening projects with community groups, as well as an ongoing trash collection initiative to prevent trash burning, tree planting projects, and community clean-ups with youth groups. I also developed several "secondary projects" including English classes, a weekly cultural-exchange radio show, a nutrition and fitness club, and a photography class.I then extended my service for 13-months to work with A Todo Pulmón Paraguay Respira, a Paraguayan environmental non-profit (see below).

Asunción, Paraguay

After completing my first two years as a Peace Corps Paraguay Volunteer, I extended to work for a third year with a local environmentally-focused NGO, A Todo Pulmón Paraguay Respira (ATP).I coordinated ATP's educational programs, which aimed to raise awareness of environmental issues in communities across the country, including through their new Environmental Ambassador initiative.ATP is also a partner organization of the Peace Corps Paraguay Environmental Conservation sector, and I acted as a liaison between the two organizations. I helped manage Volunteer requests for native tree donations for community projects, and co-organized the 4th national environmental leadership camp, Paraguay Verde, among other projects.
