In this position, I apply my expertise into the digitalization of wastewater treatment systems and the creation of advisory products that meet the regulatory, climate, and innovation ambitions of an increasingly demanding wastewater industry.

From 2013 I have been working as a Process and R&D manager at Veolia Water Technologies, where I am responsible for process/mechanical/digital R&D, sustainability assesment, and process validation of our microscreens in treatment processes involving both water and sludge.I implemented Agile methodologies to make sure that the work of the team creates solutions that provide value to our customers. I have also been actively supporting our Sales organisation as technical advisor to secure some of the largest projects in the history of our company (references below). As manager I developed a problem-solving mentality and learned how to create a healthy work environment that allows everyone to come to work with the motivation to do a great job.

Development and calibration of process models to predict nitrous oxide emissions from activated sludge reactors.

My main task was to design, control, characterize and operate a novel biofilm/membrane technology to optimize oxygen use in wastewater treatment. Results are being used for the implementation of the technology in pilot-scale. This experience has allowed me to learn to face the challenges of the R&D world in a positive and constructive way. Furthermore I could learn advanced techniques to drive top-level biotechnological investigations (FISH, qPCR, microelectrodes, EPS characterization, etc.). I was responsible for the planning of the entire experimental load of the project (everything from material/chemical purchase, evaluate the need of manpower or protocol design).Veolia Water fully financed the project. Our semiannual meetings were a valuable experience and to interact with the industrial world, create a network of contacts, and keep my research very applied and result-driven.As a PhD student I had the chance to attend some of the most important conferences in the wastewater treatment arena: IWA Leading Edge Technologies, IWA membrane technology, Water Research conference, International Symposium on microbial ecology, IWA Biofilm conference etc. This experience has allowed me to become informed about the state of the art and future trends within the wastewater sector.I was a teaching assistant in the Wastewater Treatment course offered by DTU from 2008 to 2010 and have co-supervised 6 master theses. While interacting with students I received excellent feedback that sharpened my communication and project management skills. To teach wastewater treatment has allowed me to go deeper in the understanding of each process in a wastewater treatment plant.

I applied the knowledge acquired during my engineering degree to successfully operate, control and model a membrane-aerated biofilm reactor for completely autotrophic nitrogen removal (Nitritation-Anammox process). I also built an individual-based model of the system.The hands on experience and my extensive literature review made me become and expert in nitrogen removal solutions. As a matter of fact I am co-author in two highly cited reviews about the subject (one paper and one book chapter).
