About Carlo Jacob, P.E.
I am a developer with an unusual story to tell! After practicing for seven years as a Structural Bridge Design Engineer, I made a career transition to software development. My first position in the tech industry was as a Quality Assurance Co-op, where I learned quickly, demonstrated my value to the company and was hired full-time, then rose to Lead Quality Assurance Engineer in under two years. In the nearly 3 years since, my responsibilities included managing automation development environments for my team, defining automated testing strategies, writing test scripts, managing integrations between various platforms, and guiding and training several new team members.I enjoy recollecting my unorthodox path to software engineering. As a structural engineer, I designed bridges—primarily in New England, but some across the United States. Many of my most exciting bridge design experiences involved creating models using proprietary software or visual basic to optimize the designs. These experiences reminded me of my experience in graduate school, where I used software to model the behavior of buildings during earthquakes. As I considered my career change, I reflected on my enjoyment solving problems using code.At the same time, I have been a lifelong leader in athletic endeavors, mostly as a captain of various swim teams from childhood through the collegiate level, then as the Athletic Director of Boston Triathlon Team for four years. One of my greatest athletic passions has always been understanding training/performance data, and how it translates to athletic improvements. I have always enjoyed “looking at the numbers” with respect to sports that I participate in. The combination of my passions for solving problems with code and analysis during my athletic endeavors makes the role of a software developer in a team environment a natural fit for me.My portfolio: https://www.carlojacob.com

Web Development Immersive
Completed a full-time, immersive, full-stack web development bootcamp - approximately 600 hours of in-class instruction and self-learning. This course is divided into four modules, each with its own project. Projects are completed over one week, and focus on various skills in front- and back-end web development. Three projects are completed individually, and one in a team setting.Highlighted Projects:Tuber (https://www.carlojacob.com/tuber)For my capstone project, I built an application that allows users to save and view their favorite YouTube videos. I intentionally chose to focus on styling this application, as I felt that was my greatest weakness. At the end of the short, four-day project week, I was particularly happy with the appearance of the "Your Tubes" view, and I am excited to continue improving on the other various views in the application.Primary technology: React.js, Express.js, Bootstrap.GitHub front-end repo: https://github.com/carlojacob/tuberGitHub back-end repo: https://github.com/carlojacob/tuber-apiNozama (https://moctodnozama.github.io/moctodnozama/)My team project involved building a mock e-commerce website. Users could create an account, search for and add available products to a shopping cart, purchase products using a third party API, and view order history. In my development team of three people, I served as the scrum master. In addition to building a non-relational database for the first time, this project gave me valuable experience using version control and agile methodologies.Primary technology: JavaScript, Express.js, Stripe (3rd party payment API).GitHub front-end repo: https://github.com/moctodnozama/moctodnozamaGitHub back-end repo: https://github.com/moctodnozama/moctodnozama.github.io-api

Program: Structural EngineeringThesis: Creating an Eccentrically Braced Frame Model for Application in Seismic Performance Assessments.Abstract: This thesis was written to describe the process of creating a model of eccentrically braced frames (EBF) in order to determine the performance of EBFs in moderate seismic regions. The author used the results of a shake table test in 1985 to calibrate the model. The model was able to predict the average roof displacement and the maximum link rotation on the second level of the test structure to within 13%. The author designed and created a different model for the same location and load conditions as the shake table test above, and found that the new model performed as well as the previous one, despite the design being weaker and the fact that it was designed according to modern standards. There was a 9.8% difference in the average roof displacement and a 3.5% difference in the maximum link rotation on the second level of the two models.A preliminary performance assessment of a nine-story EBF designed for moderate seismic regions showed that there was a 75% probability that it would fail under design ground motions. Modal analysis showed that second mode behavior was responsible for that high probability of failure. Strengthening the links that were most vulnerable to that second mode behavior reduced the probability of failure under design ground motions to 2%.
