About Carlos Dávalos
I'm a journalist from Mexico City and currently a comm. Doctoral candidate @ UW-Madison's SJMC. Key to my academic agenda is understanding the constitution of the mainstream media relationship between Mexico and the United States. Focusing on how this transnational relationship influences Mexican policy and communication media ecologies (i.e., public sphere), a broader, more fundamental interest is the impact of this relationship on the structural and cultural configuration of Mexican identity. Primary research avenues include popular culture, media history, mass media conglomerates, (national) identity, and technology. The different intersections between them are also relevant. Recent investigation efforts have also included how US media corporations intervened in forming Mexico’s media content (particularly FM radio) and corporate mainstream media structures.In 2017, I earned a masters degree from UT Austin's Ethnomusicology Department, complementing my 2009 Grad. School of Journalism masters from UC Berkeley. I earned my BA in Communication from Mexico City’s Universidad Iberoamericana, where I later became adjunct faculty. Beyond academia, I navigated various roles in the Mexican media, journalism, and music sectors. For over a decade, I have also (founded) co-directed a cultural management (gestión cultural) company in the form of an independent imprint and record label based in Mexico City called Discos Cuchillo. I also live stream a 2-hour weekly music show in one of Latin America's leading audio & podcast platforms —Convoy Network.
