Americorps VISTAServe as the partnership liaison between Civic House and HIAS PA. Develop the partnership for long-term sustainability.Recruit campus-wide to volunteer with Civic House’s Community Engagement Program to connect University of Pennsylvania students with Philadelphia-based nonprofit organizations while providing a space for reflection and education. Design and develop onboarding and orientation materials for volunteers at HIAS PA to insure knowledge of agency programming, adherence to agency policy, and preparation to work with clients and be persistent in their volunteer roles over time. Students are trained on adult, refugee, and immigrant educational pedagogy as well as employment cultural orientation strategies in order to co-facilitate weekly job readiness workshops. Train and supervise a team of 6-10 student volunteers, interns, co-op students, and other fellows for the Matching Grant team at HIAS PA. Facilitate bi-weekly social justice reflection sessions with student volunteers to enhance and deepen learning and critical thinking, and lead to thoughtful action.

Primary Investigator: Shalahudin Kafrawi• Collected and summarized peer-reviewed journal articles for to assist in the writing of a book on the Root Causes of Religious Extremism. Collaborated with the research team to categorize and connect various authors and ideas.• Simultaneously produced an individual project entitled “The Narrative of the Christian Nation and its Mobilization by Far-Right Extremists” and presented it at the HWS Summer Research Symposium.

Professor: Stacey Philbrick YadavAttended all class meetings and acted as a liaison and assistant to professor.Maintained office hours to remediate concerns regarding course materials and assignments as well as content related questions in regards to political theories or specific case studies from the Middle East.Facilitated weekly study tables to provide support in a group setting. Coached students in the development of strong, concise writing and appropriate sourcing of research materials.

• Oversaw job placement and workforce development of newly resettled refugees, asylees, and immigrants.• Provided one-on-one counseling with clients to create resumes, teach job search techniques, complete job applications, fill out new hire paperwork, practice interviewing, and learn US workplace culture.

Participated in Logistics Internship at Seeding Labs through Mass Life Sciences Internship Challenge. Seeding Labs is an organization aimed at providing lab equipment and other support to scientists in developing countriesAssisted the logistics operation including supply chain logistics, inventory management, asset valuation and quality control; Assigned accurate monetary Fair Market Value of Lab Equipment upon their specification and model numbers; Worked with team of staff on various activities including design and finalization of Benchmarking process through the categorization of lab equipment.
