I held the position of Alternative Breaks Summer Staff Member during the summer of 2010. As an Alternative Breaks staff member in the Volunteer Center, I created the yearly newsletter, worked to set up housing and volunteer experiences for the entire year, maintained communications with existing sites and ran the daily tasks of the Volunteer Center. As an Alternative Breaks staff member in the Volunteer Center, I created the yearly newsletter, worked to set up housing and volunteer experiences for the entire year, maintained communications with existing sites and ran the daily tasks of the Volunteer Center. During the 2010-2011 school year I assisted in the Volunteer Center as the Safer Sex Patrol (SSP) Student Coordinator. This very unique opportunity provided education to the community and CMU students about Sexual Transmitted Infections, safer sex and abstinence. I planned sexual education events around campus, provided safer sex information through Safer Sex Patrol kits at local bars and businesses, managed SSP volunteer recruitment and retention, and worked on year-long planning. I had the ability to assist students with their writing skills. We discussed creative writing assignments, reviewed essays, perfected resumes, and even worked on outlines and ideas. Consultants worked with students that came in on a weekly basis as well as with walk-ins.

During my 300 hour internship with Special Olympics Michigan I was able to build on professional development skills while doing public relations-related work. I assisted with collateral creation through brochures, fact sheets, and posters, wrote press releases, managed website content and electronic newsletter stories, and participated in the State Summer Games at CMU as well as the National Games send-off.
