In addition to my technical contributions to the Iris Lunar Rover, I've assumed the role of Representation Team Lead for Carnegie Mellon Mission Control—a comprehensive umbrella overseeing all Planetary Robotics projects at CMU, including the Iris Lunar Rover, MoonRanger Lunar Rover, and any other future projects. In this capacity, I design visual guides for internal training, translate our intricate work into diverse media formats accessible to any audience, and have plans to develop educational content for classrooms in the near future. Additionally, I handle all communications between our teams and any external media, which is particularly important in the time immediately after a space mission, as it is right now for the Iris Lunar Rover.
Iris Lunar Rover Operator For Carnegie Mellon Mission Control
I was an operator for the Iris Lunar Rover, which flew on Vulcan Centaur in Jan 2024 as a part of the Peregrine 1 mission. This involved working very intensely as a team to redefine our scientific objectives and capabilities when our mission shifted from being on the lunar surface to being in orbit attached to the Peregrine Lunar Lander shortly after launch. I actively contributed to the development and validation of hazard navigation procedures tailored for lunar surface missions, addressing challenges such as shadows and craters. This collaborative effort involved close coordination within a team during mission simulations, where we collectively strategized and tested secure pathways to accomplish our scientific objectives. Our simulations take place in the MoonYard, a simulated lunar surface test environment, utilizing Earth model rovers.I also played a key role in constructing a 1:1 scale model of the Iris Lunar Rover, with a specific focus on the Multilayer Insulation (MLI). This model is set to be showcased at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. In addition, I contributed to the endurance testing of MoonRanger, an integral component of the anticipated Artemis III mission.Currently. I am working on analyzing the data we have from our mission, writing papers to publish with our results, working with media to tell our story, and shifting some work toward the future Carnegie Mellon Planetary Robotics projects such as MoonRanger and PitMAGIC.
