Carol Brown She/Her Email and Phone Number
Carol Brown is a New Zealand born dancer, choreographer, artist-scholar and director. Trained in dance theatre in New Zealand with Shona Dunlop-MacTavish and postmodern dance in the UK and US, Carol went on to become Choreographer in Residence at the Place Theatre London where she founded Carol Brown Dances. Through collaboration with dancers, other artists and art forms, her work has developed a transdisciplinary reach. It continues to evolve and be challenged by contemporary problems and politics and strives to be relevant and necessary through engaging audiences in diverse situations of encounter. Extended residencies in Prague (Heart of the Senses), Barcelona (Parc Guell), Germany, Ahmedehbhad (Darpana) and Philadelphia (Group Motion), alongside work with artists in Aotearoa New Zealand have propelled the work into contact zones where cultural differences are navigated. Carol Brown Dances have toured internationally including to Russia, Romania, Italy, USA, Austria, Finland, Denmark, Germany and Colombia. Carol was supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation to undertake a performing arts tour to Singapore and Malaysia. Her choreographies have been presented by many festivals including Roma Europa, Dance Umbrella, Brighton Festival and the New Zealand International Festival of the Arts. Recent works include the rooftop performance Tensegrity (created for Stelarc et al's Anthropomorphic Machine at the Science Gallery Melbourne 2022), LungSong (EcoWest Festival, Auckland 2019), the interactive dance-architecture, Singularity in collaboration with Uwe Rieger and Yinan Liu (Ars Electronica, Linz 2017) and the site-specific performance PAH in collaboration with Gillian Whitehead and Star Gossage (Auckland Arts Festival 2015). Carol’s work has been acknowledged through a NESTA Dream Time Fellowship, the Jerwood Choreography Prize, and the Ludwig Forum International Prize. Completing one of the first practice-based doctorates in dance - Inscribing the Body: Feminist philosophy and choreographic practice (University of Surrey 1995) - Carol has continued to advocate for, and facilitate artistic doctoral research through Symposia, research supervision of practitioner doctorates and writings. In New Zealand she directed Choreographic Research Aotearoa, a forum for critical dance practice at the University of Auckland and taught postgraduate choreographic research and performance for 10 years. In July 2019 she was appointed Head of Dance and Professor of Choreography at the University of Melbourne.
