Women in GIS, Kenya is an initiative that brings together Women in the GIS Field in Kenya to connect, share and learn from each other. The Initiative has 3 pillars: Mentorships, Innovative projects that highlight gender issues, Capacity Building. The Women in GIS , Kenya initiative has so far organized technical sessions in collaboration with policy makers such as the Kenya Space Agency, Africa Media Hub , Kenyatta University and University of Nairobi to address the role of data governance in enhancing access to quality, relevant, accessible, timely data for decision support and community outreach. Apart from that Women in GIS has established an objective mentorship program that hopes to impact 20 students/Young professionals in each cohort. This program is a One-One mentorship platform where needs of the mentees and mentors are matched be it technical or soft. The mentorship program matches experienced Women in GIS to passionate young professionals who interact over 4 weeks in a well structured set up. Women in GIS, Kenya hopes to use data to change the African Woman’s story and is currently running a Data Viz Challenge that will showcase different aspects of the african woman and has scheduled a hackathon whose objective is to look for solutions around Female Genital Mutilation, Gender based Violence and Sexual and Reproductive health.
