About Carolyn King

I have worked as a teaching-artist in Tucson, Az. for the past 12 years, but have been making art with community members ages 3- 91 for the past 3 decades! Studio work with others has included classes, workshops & visual arts retreats in painting, drawing, mixed-media, watercolor and acrylics. My work with children in the schools has included mask-making, dioramas, Chinese brush painting,hand-made tile mosaics, painted murals and much, much more. Creative practice aligns us all witha sense of Universal Spirit as well as offers each one of us a place and a way to express our mostpersonal selves. In this fast-paced world we live in today, visual arts gives a way to slow down, to reflect and to focus.

  • Greater Tucson
Freelance Teaching-Artist In The Schools (Tusd)
Greater Tucson Jan 2003 - Present
A Variety Of Tusd Schools All Over Tucson
For the past decade, I have worked freelance through Tax Credit and grant funding as a Visiting Artist or Artist in Residence in 6+ TUSD schools. Projects vary and are evolved through conversations with principals, teachers and myself. Some schools elect to bring their entire student body together to learn about, design, fabricate and install mosaic tiles for a student-designed mosaic mural. Other schools choose to partner me with certain teachers for Arts Integration projects aligned with specific curriculum areas. Projects might be painted tiles, Faux Batik painted fabric projects, painted murals on a school wall or large canvas panels , a quarter-long drawing program culminating in an exhibit of student work, etc., etc. The topic and the materials used for each school's exploration depend on the desires of the staff and teachers. I have also worked in a number of schools, both TUSD and charter, offering Visual Arts lessons during Summer Programs for students grades K-8.

Teachers select which area of study they would like their students to deepen through visual arts lessons and projects designed to stretch learning across both sides of the brain. The most recent Core Standards for the Arts include: Imagination, Investigation, Construction and Reflection as key steps exploration of learning in both the Arts and life, itself! This work at Miles has included both individual and collaborative, "community-based" art projects from book-making to tile murals. Among other goals, facilitating students to access their ideas and feelings in order to be able to synthesize concepts and communicate in a rich, full, meaningful way are foundations for my work in schools.
