Profile bio

About Carolyn Placente

I connect people to their power to positively transform their lives, their communities and the systems and structures with which they intersect. I plan, design, manage and evaluate programs and projects, offering thought partnership, strategic support and direction, and advising and consulting services grounded in my extensive experience in the philanthropic, nonprofit and public sectors. With my deep expertise in program and organizational development, convenings and events, community organizing and policy advocacy, transformational facilitation, trauma-informed and restorative practices, capacity building and leadership development, research and data analysis, I work to advance social equity and promote belonging, while bringing a visionary as well as solutions- and detail-oriented approach to drive meaningful and lasting changes in systems, policies, and people. A humanist at heart and by academic formation, I believe sharing, listening to and learning together from our stories and experiences are essential to the critical work of reimagining and refashioning our democracy, shaped by an understanding of intersectionality of identities, histories, struggles: who we’ve been and who we wish to become. I prioritize relationships, collaboration, accountability, positivity, humility and gratitude and manifest my appreciation of difference and my unwavering commitment to social justice in all of my work. A common thread throughout my professional and lived experiences is the intentional and thoughtful urging for rigorous inquiry and dialogue around human rights, civil rights, and social equity. I work deliberately to co-create a future in which all people have the supports, opportunities and resources they need to flourish.

Community Matters equips and empowers students and adults to create schools and communities that are safe, welcoming and inclusive. The work is grounded in an inside-out approach organized around a whole school climate framework. As a Senior Trainer with Community Matters, I present Restorative Practices professional development trainings for District administrators, school staff, students and families; Safe School Ambassador® leadership development / bystander education / bullying-prevention trainings for students in 4th through 12th grade and staff; and Waking Up Courage assemblies to staff and students TK-12th Grade at schools nationwide. In all of my trainings, I ensure excellence in delivery and transformative impact while cultivating authentic belonging with diverse participants. I also design, develop and implement new curricula as needed. Trainings are designed to improve school climate, promote positive behaviors and interrupt the school-to-prison pipeline.
