About Carson Wright
Studying mechanical engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville has afforded me countless opportunities to further my education and passion for engineering. I have made the most of my time studying here, achieving a GPA of 3.75/4.0 and a minor in material science. In addition to this, I have also been able to complete a 6 month Co-op with DENSO and research focusing on the flight patterns of maple seeds at UTK's Fluid and Structures Laboratory.

Professional Practice Advisor
I work with the University of Tennessee's Engineering Professional Practice office to assist young engineering students with their resumes and job interviews. I also assist by setting up various professional events and career fairs.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
The project I have been assigned to focuses on the heat flux and ablation of ultra high temperature ceramics in post-shock, hypersonic conditions. I assist with sample preparation and test set up, configuring our Infrared camera, spectroscopy equipment, pyrometers, and radiometers. After the test is complete, I analyze the temperature profile and spectroscopy data to better understand what chemical species were released in the intense heat. While working in this lab, I have improved my analytical skills and ability to conduct and prepare for experiments. In addition to this, I redesigned our testing frame which enhanced frame stability and increased functionality of our instruments. After this redesign, we had the space to utilize our infrared camera along with our pyrometers and radiometers, a function that is necessary for future experiments. This project gave me practical experience with Solidworks and creating readable machine drawings.
Navigation Systems Engineering Intern
I worked in the Navigation Systems Branch, in which I was assigned to various A-PNT (assured position, navigation, and timing) projects and supported efforts to upgrade the GPS and inertial navigation systems of several different Naval aircraft. My role for the A-PNT projects was research oriented; most of my work was focused on reading and understanding academic papers, summarizing my findings, and using this information to create MATLAB simulations of Kalman Filtering with multiple sensor inputs. The purpose of these simulations was to analyze desired performance characteristics of future navigation systems. While working in this role I was able to demonstrate my eagerness to learn, ability to communicate complex concepts, and creativity.
Vice President Finance
VOLthon is UTK's largest student led philanthropy organization and an active member of Children's Miracle Network. VOLthon has raised over 3 million dollars for East Tennessee Children's Hospital since its founding 27 years ago, including over $170,000 last year. My role in the organization includes leading a team of student to coordinate fundraising and merchandise pushes, managing budgets, and analyzing trends throughout the year.
Merchandise Director
Led a team of students to plan and execute successful merchandise pushesCoordinated with other splits to plan successful end of the year fundraising eventAided in the design, production, and final distribution of merchandise
Undergraduate Researcher
The project I was assigned to focused on the autorotation of different species of maple seeds. My responsibilities while working here include filming the descent of the maple seeds in our windtunnel using a high speed speed camera. I would then process the film using MATLAB to calculate the decent, rotational velocity, and other flight characteristics.
Engineering Co-Op
While in this position I improved OEE and product quality for a production line that made ceramic substrates for monolithic carriers. I took the lead role on projects like installing a Vision System that measured different cell sizes to verify that no parts were mixed before shipment, and redesigning and installing several components of our microwave jigs that improved the durability, efficiency, and cost of the jigs. I also was able to run experiments to better improve our scrap rate, calibrating kiln temperatures by running thermocouple and shrink rate tests to ensure final product quality met customer standards.
