Carsten Thoma is an investor and entrepreneur who has repeatedly proven his instinct and talent for identifying, founding, and funding promising start-ups. Recognized as one of the most innovative thought leaders in the industry, Carsten co-founded hybris Software as a student in Munich, Germany in 1997. The vision of the fledging business was to develop omnichannel e-commerce software at a time when many investors underestimated the powerful impact of the Internet on business. In 2013, the company was acquired by SAP for an undisclosed sum, making it at the time the highest value paid for a private technology acquisition. He led Hybris through all phases — from the first set of employees, to introducing the industry’s first cloud ecommerce platform, to a highly profitable business. After SAP acquired Hybris in 2013, Carsten served as global president and member of the Global Executive Team at SAP until 2018. Under his leadership SAP hybris evolved into the fastest growing business and led SAP’s shift to the cloud.Carsten currently serves as President of Celonis, the pioneer and global leader in process mining. As president, Carsten is responsible for shaping Celonis’ corporate strategy and development, marketing, platform ecosystem, people and culture, as well as Celonis Labs to foster innovation. Carsten is active as an investor and mentor of several emerging global start-ups. Among these are leading enterprise software start-ups such as Celonis, Mirakl, myCujoo and Spot-a-Home as well as market-shaping tech funds like Tola Capital, 83 North, La Famiglia and Kindred, named by MIT on its 2017 list of 50 Smartest Companies. Not content with a tech portfolio, Carsten is also the owner of Sticky Fingers, a chain of rib and steakhouses, and special advisor to Wharf Cat, an independent music label.
