I spent my Air Force career in the Munitions Systems career field. We assembled, maintained, tested, inspected, transported, stored, and accounted for all Air Force assets that contained explosives—from bullets to 5,000-pound bombs—and lots of cool stuff in between! As you can imagine, this career field came with many inherent dangers. It required a keen attention to detail and constant training, which would serve me well in my post-Air Force career as an Instructional Systems Designer (ISD).I first noticed my enjoyment in helping others learn as a young supervisor. I enjoyed training subordinates on learning tasks and watching the “light bulb” come on. For me, it's always been gratifying to take a learner with zero to little knowledge of a task and guide them to the performance level. My passion for helping others learn would eventually place me behind a podium.Thirteen years into my Air Force career, I was selected for an assignment as a technical training instructor for my career field at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. During my tenure, I taught over 2,200 hours of Community College of the Air Force accredited instruction, and earned a Master Instructor Certificate, and Occupational Instructor Certification. As an instructor, I also received training in instructional design using the ADDIE model. I became heavily involved in curriculum design. I oversaw the development of several courses, from the initial analysis phase, all the way through to evaluation. After getting a taste of instructional design, I knew it was something I wanted to pursue upon exiting the Air Force. It allowed me to combine my creative side, with my passion for helping others learn. Since retirement from the Air Force, I’ve served in diverse roles designing/developing training for government and corporate clients such as B-52 pilots, Navy aircraft mechanics, submarine electricians, operators in oil refineries, and several others. I’ve designed technical skills training, compliance training, and onboarding training.
