Profile bio

About Cassidy Zobl

The short version:I’m a Creative Director, Art Director, and Designer who’s been lucky enough to work in many parts of the design industry. I started my career in editorial, moved into advertising, and I’m currently back to my true love - working as Deputy Creative Director of a national magazine. I believe that editorial design is the basis of all good design: you start with structure, learn how and when to follow it - and how and when to break it. You work within a grid, which challenges you to think outside the lines. You tend to have a main subject of focus, which allows you to explore countless new and different ways to approach the subject in photography and illustration. The longer version:My career as a creative team leader kicked off at a regional magazine in Detroit, where I learned how to create a lot with a little in six years as the Senior Art Director. From there I was hired by Campbell Ewald in Detroit as the lead designer/AD on Cadillac Magazine, and was then brought over to create the Chevrolet New Roads owner magazine pitch. Once we won the business, I led a team of designers, art directors, producers, and more, as Creative Director. I was also part of the team of directors of the agency’s content department and oversaw the creative on a handful of accounts. The challenge of creating engaging, beautiful, and effective content on behalf of complex corporate clients kept me motivated and endlessly driven. I’ve always been in love with print medium, of course, but I was also able to explore the limitless opportunities of the digital canvas, which allowed me to flourish in my thinking as a designer. When I was presented with an opportunity to join the design team for Road & Track magazine, I jumped at the chance. It was an opportunity for me to go back to the editorial design roots I loved, but on a much bigger stage than I started on. I’m so fortunate to be a part of a team that prioritized incredible art and an out-of-the-box approach to layouts.Be it designing the perfect magazine spread, getting incredible work out of leading photographers, or pushing the boundaries of brand messaging in video, I’m excited to find adventure in creation wherever I go.I’ve been very fortunate in my career and have racked up some incredible experiences, and somewhere along the line I managed to rack up quite a few awards as well.

Listed skills include Art Direction, Magazine Design, Graphic Design, Magazines, and 31 others.

Mar 2022 - Present

Creative Director

Detroit, Michigan, United States

As CD, I was part of a team of five directors that help lead the agency’s content team. This team oversaw the development of the content group, the creative assets (from concept through promotion), identifies new business opportunities, and pitches new pieces of business to clients. I oversaw the day-to-day art direction and design of Chevy New Roads print and digital content, and OnStar digital content. I was responsible for developing and mentoring designers and art directors by promoting their individual strengths, developing necessary skills to help them grow on their career path, and creating opportunities for growth that I identify in each individual. This part of my job was extremely fulfilling and I was fortunate to help shape some incredibly talented creatives.I worked with the copy and account teams to translate marketing objectives into creative executions and solutions, then helped lead creative teams in brainstorming sessions. Once ideas made it through the brainstorming process, I worked with designers/ADs to develop the creative concept and tone boards that represented the vision. And once work had gone through the production phase, I helped prepare and present new work to clients, and client leadership teams. On my two main accounts, I developed and maintained workflow procedures that ensured work was completed creatively, efficiently, and on schedule. In addition I oversaw the budgets, and worked with partner agencies to supplement when necessary. I was still hands-on in the creative process, which I truly loved. I was responsible for concepting, producing, and directing photo shoots that pushed existing creative boundaries and expressed clients' brand objectives. And to ensure I was constantly developing our creative style, I researched design and photography trends, createed and developed relationships with new artists, and maintained existing relationships with current contributors.

Oct 2021 - Mar 2022

Associate Creative Director

Detroit

As an ACD, I had a dynamic role that was split into two parts. Part one: I was responsible for concepting against story ideas to develop creative story executions, directing photo shoots, and designing - all in a style that matches the audience and the specific goals of the brand I’m working on. I work with the editor/copy writers to concept and develop story ideas, to find ways to streamline our overall art/copy process, and to find ways to continually push the project’s creative boundaries. And I work with client representatives to ensure photo shoots, videos, and overall design is consistent with brand guidelines.Part two: I oversaw a team of wonderful designers. I delegated tasks according to each employee’s personal strengthes, created timelines, offered design direction, ensured deadlines were met, troubleshot any issues that arose during the process, and reviewed and edited my team’s final products before presenting the project/design to the ECD. I made it my goal to create a smooth efficient workflow by discovering and developing my team member’s personal strengths and delegating tasks accordingly. I also made it my goal to limit the number of day-to-day issues my ECD had to be involved in by handling as many as I could, while I kept her fully informed.
