Dr. Benard’s lab works with C. elegans, a nematode, investigating nervous system maintenance throughout adulthood. This model system could have implications for Alzheimer’s among other neurological degenerative diseases. I have stayed with this lab for several years and have moved through the ranks, so to speak, during my time. I began by assisting on a massive screen along with several other people in the lab, and now work on several projects performing the neuroanatomical analysis. During my middle years, I created several strains used in a pending paper, for which I have been acknowledged, and now hope to be an author on the next paper.

During my freshman and sophomore years at Yale, I worked in the Endocrinology Department for Dr. Inzucchi as an assistant office manager. During this time, I was responsible for preparing the charts for the clinics, organizing patient information for research projects, and managing the daily office functions. This was important opportunity for me to see the inner workings of the clinic and to work closely with a physician, and expert in his field, who completed research, gave lectures, and completed clinic hours. I aspire to be a physician with strong ties to academia and research working to educate others in my field and still being a strong presence in the clinic.
