My role involved commissioning, editing, subbing all kinds of writing for The Spinoff, from international geopolitical analysis, to first-person essays, to chocolate and crisp rankings. One of the unique aspects of The Spinoff is its regular use of "non writers" to write about their areas of expertise. We also employ many young writers at the start of their careers – both can require extra editing, and particular sensitivity.Day to day, my role involved editing and subbing pieces of writing (sometimes multiple rounds), writing headlines, standfirsts and social "sells", choosing photos from Getty and other sources, creating original imagery on occasion, and loading everything into the site's Wordpress backend. I was an everyday user of Meta Business Suite/Facebook Creator Studio, Tweetdeck, Echobox, Parse.ly (and previously Google Analytics and Chartbeat) and Slack. For a time, I was weekend editor of The Spinoff, helming the site entirely and updating the daily Live Updates news blog.While I was primarily an editor, I continued to write across the News, Society and Pop Culture sections. I authored the weekly Rec Room pop culture and TV newsletter, and regularly wrote TV reviews for the site.
