I led 10-day walking tours on the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage trail across northern Spain. As a guide, I was responsible for coordinating meals, accommodation, transportation logistics and entertainment for 10+ adults. My employer liked to say that as a guide, one has to be the "wearer of many hats." I was a caterer for our gourmet picnic lunches, a company photographer, a Spanish interpreter for our non-Spanish speaking clients, a motivator when the walking was tough, a storyteller when the road was boring, a listener when a client wanted to share, and a problem-solver when things went awry. I was whatever our clients needed me to be.Behind the scenes, I gained experience working as part of a small team (2 guides and 1 driver per tour), working with various vendors (restaurants, hotels, shops), keeping track of trip finances... and doing most of it in Spanish.http://www.frescotours.com

Logroño Area, Spain

While working as an English Language Assistant for I.E.S. Quintiliano and I.E.S. Escultor Daniel, I also gave private and semi-private English lessons. Every week, I prepared a variety of lessons, activities, or conversation topics for a variety of clients, aged 11-adult, at a variety of English levels.

La Rioja, Spain

I worked in two different secondary schools (I.E.S. Quintiliano in Calahorra and I.E.S Escultor Daniel in Logroño) over the course of two academic years, preparing and teaching lessons to groups of 2-25 students and provided language support (grading, editing presentations, resolving teachers' doubts etc.) to each schools' English Department. I also hosted and facilitated a conversation class for other teachers at I.E.S. Escultor Daniel who wanted to practice and improve their listening and speaking skills.

ExportGA 2010 is an intensive export-training program which allows export-ready companies to develop their skills through a series of six workshops on export methodology. Each participating company is assigned an international business student from the University of Georgia to help them with their research. I was one of these students.

IMPACT is a program run out of the Center for Leadership and Service at UGA that engages students in "an affordable, week-long, substance-free, experiential service learning project that encourages an understanding of pressing social issues in a significant way." I was first a participant on a "Children's Issues" project at the Thornwell Children's Home in Clinton, SC. In addition to the week-long project, we also participated in various local service projects.After loving my experience as a participant, I applied and was accepted to be a Site Leader for the following year. My co-site leader and I organized, from start to finish, an "Environmental Awareness" trip for 14 participants to work with The Nature Conservancy in Shady Valley, TN. This job included working with a fixed budget provided by the university, finding donors to help supplement this budget and/or reduce our expenses, planning meals, transportation, lodging and entertainment, and setting up additional activities with the Knoxville Zoo and the innovative agricultural department of a local technical school.Both experiences truly impressed upon me the importance of paying attention to these social issues and a desire to do more. I hope that whatever job I have in the future will either directly involve helping people or communities in need.
