Executive Director
HUB-BUB is a nonprofit created in 2006 by the City of Spartanburg to revitalize its downtown area. Through innovative cultural programming and a nationally-recognized artist-in-residence program, HUB-BUB has helped reinvigorate a languishing area on the perceived edge of downtown. Through fundraising and grant writing, I was able to raise over $80,000 and return the residency program to HUB-BUB within 4 months of my start date. My duties included everything from long term visioning to local, statewide and national presentations to creating and managing an internship program with 3 local colleges. I also worked with city staff and developers to make HUB-BUB the unofficial marketing arm of downtown. My responsibilities also included bi-weekly community presentations to civic groups and local institutions, day-to-day management of 2 full time staff, 4 part-time staff and 2-3 interns per semester. I managed venue operations for over 160 events, monthly program development and implementation, fundraising (both event-based, donor relationships and grant writing), budget management and monthly accounting, board administration, communication and coordination with both community, regional and national stakeholders, and strategic planning. I also wrote, received and managed federal, state, local and private foundation grants during my tenure at HUB-BUB.
Media And Communications Officer
The Mary Black Foundation is an independent private foundation in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Its mission is to improve the health and wellness of the people and communities of Spartanburg County. It does this primarily by focusing its efforts on two priority areas: active living and early childhood development. Effective communications efforts are critical to understanding and shaping important public policy debates around issues affecting our work, building public support for our major program and policy objectives, and building partnerships and alliances with other influential actors who can advance shared objectives. The Foundation’s Media and Communications Officer, in consultation with the Director of Programs and the President, is responsible for planning and managing the use of the Foundation’s “voice” in support of key issues, for extending and protecting its reputation, and for managing key events. It does so by leading and coordinating Foundation communications efforts and managing relationships [with the philanthropic sector and other key foundation partners], the media, Foundation staff and Trustees, grantees, and other external and internal stakeholders, as well as with the general public.
Economic Development Coordinator
Managed projects such as the Spartanburg Downtown Master Plan and city-wide Wayfinding Signage Program. Advocated for the arts, helping create the Art Cycle public art program and founded the Jazz on the Square event, now in its 8th year, to promote visitors to downtown. Began Sustainability Program at the City, including creating an internal recyling program and ICLEI designation. Worked to bring new businesses and grow existing businesses in the city.
