Since the beginning of last year I returned to practice as a Registered Dietitian and have fulfilled locum contracts at various NHS Trusts, ranging between a few weeks to several months, through which I have developed well-rounded experience regarding the spine of the NHS and how systems differ between Trusts. The ability to adapt and take things in my stride has enhanced my confidence, diversified my skill-set, and intensified my passion for health and well-being. I have performed a mixture of acute and community positions over this time. Acute caseload: I have worked in numerous surgical and medical areas, such as AAU (Acute Admissions Unit), gastro wards, diabetes wards, elderly care and dementia-friendly wards. The diversity of this caseload has enabled me to dietetically assess, monitor and treat a large range of ailments by means of dietary education, food fortification, oral nutritional supplements and/or enteral feeding, such as nasogastric tubes or PEG/PEJs. I have attended in-service training sessions where appropriate and participated in audits. Community caseload: I performed various outpatient clinics at multiple hospitals and GP surgeries. Some of these were general outpatient clinics (covering nutrition support for disease-specific malnutrition or dietary education for specific conditions); whereas others were specifically tailored towards weight management, diabetes, COPD, and gastroenterology.

I was privileged to work for a company that have been in the market for 74 years dealing with nutritional ingredients. My primary role related to the portfolio of Branded raw materials offered, all of which have clinical data, technical support and some have patented technologies. What is great about these raw materials is that Gee Lawson often has exclusive UK/European distribution agreements - putting them in a unique position to provide these innovative ingredients. Gee Lawson follows stringent Quality Assurance and seal of approval processes in order to ensure optimal quality from supplier to customer.Due to the nature of the business, I acquired knowledge regarding the production chain of each raw ingredient from manufacturer through to consumer, and touched on EFSA claims, labelling regulations, and trademark agreements. The main customers are companies that manufacturer food supplements and/or functional foods and beverages, so understanding how these finished products are made and the quality measures that should be followed, was enlightening (as a consumer myself and from a Dieticians point of view). The year spent in this role has accelerated personal and professional growth, due to which I am more confident than ever that my soul-satisfaction will be achieved by being patient-orientated and directly dealing with nutrition as opposed to B2B. Although I left this company to focus on my Return to Practice portfolio, I view the work they do and products they offer in great respect.

St Mary’s Kwamagwaza Hospital is a 141-bedded government hospital residing in the Uthungulu district of Kwazulu-Natal South Africa.This position focused on disease-specific nutrition counselling, support and treatment by thoroughly assessing relevant in- and out-patients and securing monthly follow-up appointments where necessary. I performed regular group talks on the chronic diseases of lifestyle, focusing on the pathology of each condition and the nutritional guidelines for preventing disease-progression. This ensured that every applicable in- and out-patient was made aware of the complications and educated on how to change their lifestyle within their socio-economic status.Overall, the rural setting of St Mary’s Kwamagwaza Hospital was a very humbling and self-motivating experience. Treating patients with devastating ailments within the confines of the language-barrier proved to be a continual challenge. Due to my positive outlook on life I strongly feel that the whole experience resulted in a lot of personal and professional growth. I attained empathy, self-confidence, and the desire to make a difference towards the operational integrity of the community health facility. My biggest achievements within the workplace are single-handedly setting up the Dietetics department and continuously being a voice towards the improvement of patient care and accountability for inefficiencies.
