Over my past 30 years in healthcare, opportunities have come my way which have shaped a fairly unique skill-set which enables valid contribution throughout all stages of health infrastructure briefing, design and procurement. My career attests to a sound understanding of the acute hospital sector and the client’s aspiration for an environment which influences a positive user experience as well as the delivery of safe, high quality patient centred care. My blend of clinical, operational and strategic roles in healthcare provision alongside roles within a health facility design team has enabled me to be effective in my current role. By working collaboratively within the design team I am able to translate health service plans, articulate models of care and functional design briefs, provide advice and reconcile plans to function, safety and care. On a more detailed level I develop and maintain complex schedules of accommodation, facilitate user groups, write briefs and reports and reconcile plans to current evidence, contemporary models of care and functional design briefs. The majority of my clinical years were spent in the private sector within the operating theatre environment. Working in operating theatres instilled a strong sense of teamwork, an ability to perform in stressful situations and think laterally. In senior management and executive roles, private sector employers expected an accountable approach to streamlining process, achieving efficiency, and attaining a high standard of customer service. These attributes have stood me in good stead for adapting to the “project” environment.
