I completed my PhD in public health/epidemiology in February 2016. My thesis investigated the definition and measurement of multimorbidity, and its impact on health and wellbeing, using self-reported general population data from the Scottish Health Survey.

As Deputy Director of ScotCen (NatCen Social Research's Scottish office) I assisted the Director with: strategic development; liaison with external clients and stakeholders; personnel management; and financial oversight. I regularly deputised for the Director at senior management meetings. In addition to these organisational management responsibilities, I continued to have a senior research role as Director of the 2008-2011 Scottish Health Survey. I led the multi-site team of researchers, statisticians, programmers, and logistics and fieldwork managers responsible for delivering this complex and high profile Scottish Government population survey. I oversaw its budget (£7.2 million), its NHS ethical approval, and its very demanding reporting and data delivery schedule. In my final year at ScotCen I led the successful bid for the 2012-15 survey contract (£4 million), which included a major revision to its biomarker collection methods, requiring a new approach to fieldworker training.
