Catherine Evans Email and Phone Number
I recently completed a PhD on the genetic regulation of wheat senescence (think leaf yellowing). I started at University of Birmingham in 2019 before moving to John Innes Centre in 2021. Previously, I achieved a BA in Biology (First) at the University of Oxford. My proudest achievements include:• learning and implementing the cutting-edge technique of DAP-seq in wheat,• collaborating in an industry placement (CASE) with RAGT UK in 2022 and achieving placement goals,• adapting through the pandemic and a lab relocation to deliver the PhD thesis on schedule,• leading discussion groups at workshops with the Rosalind Franklin Women in Wheat network, and• presenting my PhD research at the Monogram and SEB conferences in 2023 and in a recent preprint. https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.02.02.578592

Postgraduate Researcher (Visiting)John Innes Centre Oct 2021 - Sep 2023Norwich, England, United Kingdom -
Plant Sciences Phd ResearcherUniversity Of Birmingham Oct 2019 - Sep 2023Birmingham, England, United KingdomIn this PhD project with Dr. Philippa Borrill, I investigated how NAC transcription factor genes affect the timing of leaf senescence, grain protein content and yield in wheat. I identified possible downstream target genes of NAC transcription factors via DAP-seq (a cutting-edge genomic technique). I developed genetic markers to track variants in NAC genes across wheat diversity. -
InternRagt Uk May 2022 - Jul 2022Ickleton, England, United KingdomJoining the Wheat Pathology team, I assisted with wheat field trials and a crossing program. I delivered objectives linked to wheat pre-breeding, including collaborating with colleagues across teams. -
ResearcherUniversity Of Warwick Jan 2020 - Mar 2020Coventry, England, United KingdomIn this project under Dr. Isabelle Carre, I studied the effect of drought stress on circadian rhythms in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. I gained skills in experimental design, plant crossing, RT-PCR, time-lapse imaging, and report writing. This project was part of MIBTP. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantUniversity Of Oxford Apr 2018 - Jun 2018OxfordIn this project under Prof. Jane Langdale, I investigated a gene involved in development in the moss Physcomitrium patens. -
Front Of House Catering AssistantTrinity College Cambridge Jul 2017 - Dec 2017Cambridge, United Kingdom(Part time.)I had a range of experience from serving formal dinners and from the canteen, to drinks receptions and corporate function dinners. At function dinners, I worked in a team of four to efficiently serve and clear courses of food and wine to a table of 30 guests, and treated guests in a helpful and professional manner.
