I am HCPC registered Chief Biomedical Scientist. I recently moved to work in a Regional Newborn Screening Laboratory, as a Chief Biomedical Scientist. My role is expected to have overall technical responsibility for the department and to run and manage the Newborn Screening and Specialist Endocrine Department. Previous to this I worked, for eighteen and a half years in a biochemistry section of a blood science department in a dedicated oncology centre. My previous role was to run and manage the automation section. This included troubleshooting, stock control and ordering for the high throughput analysers. I am responsible for the EQA for the section as well as evaluating and implementing new quality control material and validating new analysers and assays. I write SOPs and carry out audits in line with UKAS. I am registered for CPD with the IBMS have completed three diplomas. I am qualified to act as workplace assessor for students completing the IBMS registration portfolio. I have trained Haematology and Transfusion staff to work competently in biochemistry. I carry out personal development reviews. I have a MSc in Biomedical Science and Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS) and have been awarded Chartered Scientist (CSci) status. My project title was ‘Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rates in Patients with Cancer: An Evaluation of Available Methods’. This led to the Wright Formula for eGFR being adopted at The Christie and a paper being published(Barraclough,L.H. Field, C. et al. (2008) ‘Estimation of Renal Function-What is Appropriate in Cancer Patients?’ Clinical Oncology 20: 721 - 726).
