I am currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Liverpool designing and delivering the ICAEW Strategic partnership modules for Tax Compliance and Advanced Tax. Prior to maternity leave, I was the Director of Studies for the BA Hons Accounting and Finance Programme, responsible for the structure of the programme, student experience, accreditation and general governance. I am a qualified Chartered Accountant (FCA) and Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).I spent just under 10 years at HMRC in a variety of roles including Advisory Accountant for Fraud and Avoidance (Special Compliance Officer) working on COP 8 and COP 9 cases, Group Director of the Special Civil Investigations Group, overseeing Hansard and complex tax avoidance cases. I then moved to Enforcement & Compliance as Project Director, leading the project on the implementation of information powers and the new penalty regime under Finance Act 2008. This was a cross cutting piece of legislation which harmonised the powers and penalty regime across all heads of tax (direct and indirect). I worked closely with policy colleagues, managed internal and external stakeholders; producing guidance and training for c 28,000 HMRC staff and external partners and changing the way HMRC used taxpayer information and levied penalties.I was seconded to the Business Tax Unit leading a project on Agent Strategy. My final role at HMRC was as Head of Governance & Performance; leading a team with responsibility for performance management and reporting, appeals and governance processes across the Compliance department.Prior to joining HMRC I worked for just over a year as an Accountancy and Tax tutor for ATC (NW) which is now part of Kaplan Education.In 2001, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant following a graduate role in Audit with KPMG where I worked on a range of OMB, pensions audits and audits of large plc's.I
