Bcn Tissue Bank Operations Manager
As Manager of the Breast Cancer Now Tissue Bank I have overall responsibility for the operation and day-to-day running of the institute’s Breast Tissue Banks. In this role I oversee performance of the team and ensure that all elements are in place to allow smooth operation of our duties, including developing and owning our Standard Operating Procedures and supporting departmental policies. Central to this is ensuring our practices are aligned to local and statutory legal guidelines and regulations. To manage the team’s performance I oversee and report against our agreed Key Performance Indicators directly to my Principal Investigator working directly with them to highlight and address any risks or opportunities. Additionally I also help manage our budgets and report against them as needed to align with financial policies whilst also forecasting any requirements for the team to continue delivery whether through additional staff or equipment.
Tissue Bank Coordinator
The main aspect of my role was to coordinate tissue collection and storage at our collaborating centres, and to validate and maintain the tissue database linked to the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund Tissue Bank (PCRFTB). Beyond this, I worked on setting up new centres, to ensure compliance with GCP, HTA, DPA and other regulatory aspects. I also maintained a focus on updating and creating new SOPs to ensure efficient running of the tissue bank. Additionally, I managed requests for tissue from researchers, along with ensuring appropriate MTA and DSA’s are signed before sample release, coordination of peer-review through committees and groups, as well as financial and operational reporting to the PCRF and other regulatory authorities. This role was a maternity cover.
Tissue Bank Acquisition Officer
The primary focus of this role was driven by engaging with patients across different sites to consent them for donation of human tissues. I communicated clearly to help them understand the process, and worked hard to connect with individuals to ensure they felt comfortable with donating. To make contact with these patients I worked directly with our clinical teams, and built a mutual understanding of our requirements and how we could work best with them to provide a productive service and not interfere with the patient’s care. I worked closely with our research teams to build my understanding of their work, allowing me to anticipate their requirements and tailor services to deliver positive outcomes, and enable their crucial work. Beyond this I also coordinated the receipt of clinical trial samples, and led in engaging with external companies in order to source a new sample tracker. Using this experience, I supported the establishment of our new database, and I worked hard to ensure our data management and audit processes ran smoothly. I passed on my knowledge and experience through training and managing two new Acquisition Officers in their day-to-day work.
