I'm also the creator and founder of ScreenLifeBalance.com, which is a resource hub dedicated to helping people create healthier relationships with technology and stay connected to what's important to them in life. • Freelance
    Diabetes Advocate And Consultant
    Freelance Feb 2001 - Present
I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2001 when I was 22 years old, and have been living with it, thinking about it, participating in clinical trials for it, and writing professionally about it for more than twenty years. In addition to my experience as a professional health and science journalist, I work as a public speaker, patient advocate, consultant, writer and usability expert specializing in bridging the gap between (and aligning the incentives of) patients, pharmaceutical and device companies, researchers, healthcare providers, and government and private payers--with the goal of improving outcomes for all.I have a particular interest in patient education and engagement, as well as in bringing the patient perspective to product development, since it's patients themselves who best understand patient needs. As a former teacher, I also love educating other people about diabetes, and enjoy leading and participating in workshops that provide a crash course about the disease to anyone who might need it.As a person with Type 1 diabetes, I am acutely aware of the physical and emotional demands of the disease (see my New York Times article "Thinking About Diabetes With Every Bite," for more details). And as a teacher, professional writer, and entrepreneur, I love nothing more than to brainstorm and collaborate with people on creative products and services that might lessen its burden. Sample areas of diabetes-related expertise include providing a patient's perspective on the physical, emotional and financial (and insurance-related) burdens of the disease, brainstorming better ways for healthcare providers to engage with patients, communicating the benefits delivered to patients by new diabetes technologies and medications, identifying what diabetes technologies and data management systems should look like from a patient's perspective, and developing marketing messages and communications strategies that connect with the patients they're meant to serve.
