I set up Outdoor People in 2014 to make it easy to get outdoors for everyone, especially children and families. We are a Social Enterprise, and we campaign, advocate and lead programmes that change cultures and practices in homes, communities and schools making outdoor play part of every day. We took on the franchise to deliver the OPAL Primary Programme in August 2020 and now work with schools across London and East Kent, making playtimes brilliant. I also host the OPAL conferences held termly (available on Youtube). We have a Community Outdoors Shop in Hackney selling beautiful things to help you get outdoors more and offering advice and support to the local community so the feel good inside about going outdoors.All profits from the shop, freelance and consultancy work support our Outdoor Families programmes taking families on walks around Hackney and camping in Kent.

Empty Classroom Day started in the UK in 2011, founded by Anna Portch and a group of committed volunteers. When I took up the reins it reached approximately 100k children in 9 countries. Five years later we touched over 11 million children in 177 countries.The campaign was grown by Semble (previously Project Dirt), with backing from Unilever's Dirt is Good brands (Persil, Omo, etc), and a set of amazing NGOs in Australia, South Africa, Chile, Finland, India, Indonesia, Portugal, Turkey and beyond. It was an amazing partnership with everyone believing in the importance of children getting outdoors - for their health, connection to nature and happiness.In the last survey we did we asked what the impact had been. Over two thirds of schools said they’ve increased their time to play and time for outdoor learning since getting involved in the campaign! That's a serious success. It was an honour and delight to work with Semble and the NGOs worldwide on this. The campaign continues to encourage schools to celebrate at least one lesson outdoors and to focus on their playtimes... and then inspire schools everywhere to make outdoor learning and play part of EVERY DAY.
