I worked in a variety of roles at Hastings Borough Council, from communications to event management, and finally in tourism. In this role I managed the website for the whole of 1066 Country, which spans Bexhill, Rye, Battle and surrounding areas, as well as Hastings.

I joined Hastings Direct in August 2014 in a newly created position as the company's first copywriter. I created a tone of voice guide for use across all existing and future customer-facing communications, including documents created through Thunderhead as part of the company's migration to the Guidewire system.

The Hastings Independent is a fortnightly community newspaper run by volunteers. My final position there was as news editor, but I also helped with organising meetings and training sessions, recruiting and supporting new volunteers, editing articles and giving feedback, responding to complaints, co-managing the Twitter and Facebook accounts, and uploading stories to the website. I left to avoid a conflict of interests with my new job.

The Guardian is the UK's fourth biggest quality newspaper by print circulation, and its first by digital circulation.I started out working as a sub-editor on the news desk, for both print and online, and later worked mainly for Professional Networks, which provides sector-specific news on housing, local government, media, higher education, healthcare, social enterprise and more.

Emphasis delivers courses to help businesses and individuals improve their writing skills. My job was to plan, commission, design, lay out and edit the weekly writing-skills newsletter. I also wrote articles for it, and for the company's blog. I ran the Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn groups, and edited the third edition of the company's writing guide, The Write Stuff.

Which? tests goods and investigates services to help consumers make informed choices.As one of a team of five sub-editors, I was responsible for managing the production process of five or six features per print issue, which involved liaising with researchers, designers, editors, the legal department and the PR department. This was in addition to daily web editing.I also helped rewrite some sections of the house style guide, following an organisation-wide focus on brand values.

The Times is the biggest selling broadsheet newspaper in the UK.I worked on the weekend supplements, including the housing and culture sections and the magazine.

The Grocer is the UK's second biggest weekly B2B magazine with national circulation.I started as a sub-editor and was promoted to deputy chief six months later. My duties included managing the copy flow, liaising with the designers, editing features and news and proofreading. I also ran the production process when the chief sub-editor was away.After I left in 2010, I continued to return on a freelance basis for the next four years, as a sub-editor and feature writer.

I taught English to second language learners, from beginners to advanced levels, both at the education centre and out in the community across London. This included delivering weekly sessions to staff at several hotels, women-only classes at a refugee support group, and English and Computing classes at a Sudanese community centre.I was made redundant when the funding structure for the courses was changed, leading to a large number of tutors being laid off at the same time.

This was a short-term contract, to bring a group of four students up to the required IELTS level for their university courses. We did intensive lessons five days a week for three hours a day, and I'm happy to say that when they retook their exams, all four passed.

I worked as an English language teacher for Nova Group, delivering lessons to small groups of adults and children. I started out in Hiroshima's main branch, and subsequently moved to two of its smaller branches as the senior teacher in each (splitting my week between the two branches).
