I have worked extensively in efforts to create participatory partnerships between academic institutions and communities. My work in academia has also developed my research and evaluation skills and instilled a passion for making research useful. I apply my research, evaluation, and community engagement skills to my leadership of programs that bring diverse sectors and disciplines together to promote use of evidence to advocate for and enhance practice in nature-based learning, nature play and other forms of connecting children, youth and families to the natural environment. Professor
CurrentThrough my work as a faculty member at the University of Minnesota I pursue two passions. The first is the developmental impact of nature-based education and nature play on children particularly for youth at risk for academic failure or disengagement. The second is community-engaged scholarship. In pursuit of the first passion, I serve as the consulting Research Director for the Children & Nature Network. I have overseen the development of C&NN's robust, searchable Research Library and the publication of its monthly Research Digest. I also led a National Science Foundation grant-funded project called the Science of Nature-Based Learning Collaborative Research Network, in partnership with C&NN and the North American Association of Environmental Education. Through affiliation with the University of Minnesota Masonic Institute for the Developing Brain, I am creating an initiative to advance the field of nature-based learning by supporting educational, behavioral and neuroscientific research, translation of evidence to practice and policy, and the professional development of the teaching workforce. I pursue the second passion through lecturing and consulting about professional development on issues related to community-based participatory research, community-engaged scholarship, partnership formation, and career advancement as a community-engaged scholar. In my role as a faculty member in the Pediatrics Department's Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Health I serve on the interdisciplinary fellowship training faculty and mentor students and junior faculty.
Associate Professor
Associate Professor Of Pediatrics And Extension Specialist, Center For Community Vitality
As an Extension Specialist within the Extension Center for Community Vitality, I mentored faculty and staff in general areas of professional development as well as deepening Extension's engaged research and programming.
Consulting Research Director
CurrentAs the consulting research director I work with the Children & Nature Network to identify and curate the peer-reviewed scientific literature that helps us understand the impact of nature contact on children's health, learning and development. I also serve as principle investigator of the National Science Foundation-funded project "The Science of Nature-Based Learning Collaborative Research Network". This project uses a "Network Weaving" approach to developing and sustaining an intentional network of researchers of diverse disciplines as well as members of education, museum, environmental education and philanthropy sectors. The Network aims to accelerate the pace of research on understanding the mechanisms of nature's impact on children's learning and educational outcomes.
