Ski Instructor / Semi-Retired

Whistler, British Columbia, Canada

One of the most rewarding things from my corporate life was the act of helping, mentoring and motivating people. The backdrop has changed slightly, my office is the amazingly beautiful outdoors of Whistler BC. I now get to once again marry up two passions, a love of Skiing and the enjoyment and satisfaction of helping people improve while providing a safe and fun environment in which to learn.

Director, Solutions Infrastructure

Vivonet

Vancouver, Canada Area

- Conducted a complete audit/breakdown of the systems/software supporting Vivonet’s cloud based system. This provided much needed clarity and transparency in understanding cost per subscriber and provided invaluable data to measure the total cost of service. - Reduced infrastructure spend by over $200K per year and identified additional cost reducing opportunities. Championed high value improvements that would both reduce cost and improve reliability. This was accomplished through auditing, implementing controls, removing inefficiencies, in addition to leveraging AWS coast saving tooling and services.- Identified the need to replace an aging and ineffective monitoring system. Then rolled out a new toolset/system that dramatically improved transparency and visibility to service performance, empowering the team toward a more proactive approach using data. This facilitated proactive identification and resolution of issues before they became a customer problem. It also reduced the mean time to recovery when issues did have a customer impact. -Implemented a cross-functional blameless post mortem process to identify causes and promote organizational learning. Provided a safe environment for staff to gain an understanding of what occurred and how the team can continually learn from it and improve going forward. - Collaborated with Development and Quality partners to prototype continuous delivery methods. Enabled the automation of unit and functional test execution though the release pipeline. This was instrumental in setting the organization up for improvements in speed and quality and delivering value to the customer.- Successfully implemented a new Disaster Recovery policy with the appropriate enactment and testing procedures. Conducted successful tests of these new DR configurations and procedures.

Career Break

All Over The World

In October of 2015 I left a job that I loved in a discipline I was extremely passionate about. I had a great boss and group of peers along with the most talented operational team I’ve ever worked with. I had autonomy and was entrusted and empowered to shape the future of Technical Operational within EA’s global marketing organization. Why did I leave? I firmly believe we need to make our own opportunities and take full advantage of them. As one progresses through life we eventually start to consider our own mortality. We consider how we can best use our time while young(ish) and healthy. My wife and I have seen far to many family and friends leave us too early. For us, deciding to press the pause button on our careers was a way for us take full advantage our relative youth and health. To take advantage of our passion for travel and experiencing different cultures. To swing the pendulum towards life in the ever-present challenge of balancing work and life. As the old saying goes life is too short.

Oct 2015 - Sep 2016

Director, Technical Operations - Ea Pulse

Transformed EA’s web technical operations group into a DevOps leader at EA- Looked to successful companies and individuals who were thought leaders in DevOps culture and technical tooling. Team members were more engaged, showed more ownership and produced higher quality work.- Incrementally changed the way we worked in terms of culture and technology. Embedded resources with product teams, implemented agile scrum methods, operations working more like developers in terms of tooling and process. Created a new infrastructure systems and release automation platform for web at EA- Dramatically reduced time required to provision new technology environments from three to six days down to a matter of hours.- Fully automated the code release pipeline using continuous delivery practices. Incorporated automated testing routines to improve quality checks and deliver greater degrees of agility to our development partners and product teams. Patriated and reduced operational risks for legacy/orphaned websites and technology- Downsized and migrated infrastructure out of multiple data centres, simplified administration and reduced hosting costs by $250K/year- Migrated easports.com and EA Careers website under the web team’s operational umbrella using our new automation platform. Aligned operational responsibilities with the team creating the website. Facilitated end to end accountability to a single cross functional team. Ultimately provided the product teams with more agile technology environment leading to productivity gains. Partnering and leveraging EA’s global teams to drive out efficiencies- Transitioned website QA delivery from an external agency to a team of contractors, reduced overall QA cost by $225K per year. Built up new QA capabilities and tool sets, subsequently realigned this group under World Wide QA (WWQA) to provide WWQA with a web testing arrow for their quiver.
