Responsible for two proprietary Unix-based Pascal compilers that were used internally to compile code that ran on Nortel’s digital switches.One of a 4-person development team responsible for designing and implementing an emulator of Nortel’s proprietary M68000-based switching peripherals. Emulation included an M68000 interpreter, memory management and simulators for Nortel’s proprietary circuit cards. This was written in C++ and ran on Unix.Member of a 4-person team responsible for development and support of an Oracle database in a distributed computing environment that was the repository for corporate standard data. This data was distributed to over 80 subscribers worldwide. Distribution of data was near real-time and was achieved with Oracle’s advanced asynchronous replication via deferred jobs when possible, use of IBM’s MQ Series, and FTP of flat-files containing delta transactions. Prime for Nortel’s corporate Data Standards program. Responsibilities included facilitating weekly meetings for discussion and ratification of proposed data standards and investigating and researching new data standards.

Along with two colleagues, cofounded Afiniti Technologies. The initial product offering was an online license renewal and payment system for state-licensed professionals. This evolved into providing comprehensive web sites for State Boards as well as an application tied into the license renewal system for tracking mandatory continuing education. Clients included the NC State Board of Architecture, NC State Board of Electrical Engineers, NC State Board of Pharmacy, NC State Board of General Contractors, NC State Board of Morticians, TN State Board of Architecture and the LA State Board of Architecture. The company was sold in 2003 due to the death of one of the founding partners.

Investigated the feasibility of modifying DG’s ANSI ’74 COBOL compiler to support ANSI COBOL ’85 functionality. Responsibilities included maintenance of this compiler; interfacing with new releases of DG’s common code generator, optimizer, debugger and language runtime libraries; and coordinating activities with the QA department. Responsible for designing, implementing and testing DG’s COBOL interpreter. This was a new implementation, written in C using lex and yacc and developed on Unix, of DG’s existing ICOBOL interpreter for their mini-computers that was written in proprietary assembly language. Also served as DG’s primary representative on the ANSI COBOL Committee; participated in college recruiting; and acted as system administrator for the department’s MV/10000 running AOS/VS and an MV/2000 running DG/UX (Data General's version of Unix).
