Marks is a mobile application that tracks trendy locations for food/drinks. I implemented the recommendation/search system that is still in use in the application.I was the first employee and only data scientist in a team of three when Marks project was started. Our objective was to :- automatically detect trendy locations and suggest them to users- be able to recommend new places to users, based on their activityI was in charge of recommendations. Initially, I set up a system based on collaborative filtering, that took raw files from our crawled check-in as inputs. It was written from scratch in python and served to the app with a simple REST API. For latency reasons and difficulties to pipeline the whole process robustly, I decided to switch to an Elasticsearch based solution (a rather radical change!). I found that translating the recommendation problem into a query problem in Elasticsearch gave room for spending more time on data questions than struggling with implementation. Also, Elasticsearch is an incredibly powerful and fun technology to use ! Our recommendations became more relevant, faster, and very easy to tune, which was great for testing and rapidly update our system.Things I spent a lot of time on : Python with Pandas / Numpy / Luigi (workflow management module) / matplotlib, Elastichsearch, Logstash, Kibana, Jupyter notebooks, recommendation systems algorithms Other things : Docker, Kafka, Git

Quinten is a data analysis consulting company that specializes in explanatory analysis of the data, a crucial aspect for applications where predictive analysis is not enough (eg : drug design, marketing campaign targeting, customer segmentation). As a data analyst consultant, I worked on projects that focused on causal discovery and used an in-house algorithm (association rule learning). I decided it was time for some open minding and enriching adventures, I felt like traveling to new horizons and embracing new cultures ! Hum also, I wanted to learn Japanese and was very excited at the idea of exploring Tokyo. So I packed my stuff and headed to Japan for five weeks... that turned into a year! These months abroad deeply affected me (in a good way!) and what they taught me is invaluable. I still keep a lot of this experience with me today. A non-haiku take away :Japanese language, an epic journey. Japanese culture, a puzzling dance.Japanese food, a year long feast.
