Providing half days Appreciative Inquiry experiences for groups of MBA students.

Young Academics combine work assignments and professional learning in the Breinstein Program, partly fueled by the Academy for Information and Management. The 18 month course includes various inspirational speakers, masters and experts, and a backbone learning journey of growing sustainable OD competences for the purpose of handling a complex organizational challenge, through the application of various innovative, social constructive approaches (design thinking/doing, process oriented OD, appreciative inquiry, generative listening, circle way dialogue, and serious gaming). My role is to inspire, facilitate and support the students in that backbone learning journey. Doing that is both an honour and a pleasure, a generative contribution I would say.

DutchMail Masters originated from EFQM Excellence approach and has grown into an internal competition annex learning and sharing event, in which project and departments measure themselves against a set of strategic criteria, to be judged by a jury consisting of internal senior managers and external experts, and the winners to be celebrated in the Annual Senior Management Meeting.

Title of research projectOrganizing Generativity: a Conceptual Framework to Appreciate and Inquire the Fitness ofOrganizational InterventionsAbstractLess than two decades ago, the word generativity entered the domain of organizationaldevelopment (OD). Although the adjective generative suggests future oriented, procreativecharacteristics, and although generativity is prominently mentioned in the realm ofAppreciative Inquiry (AI) - which is known as a life-giving, future forming approach toorganizational change - both the practical and the scholarly application of the word do notreally live up to the suggested expectations. For the sake of organizational well-being, thepotential of generativity deserves to be unleashed. In this thesis the term generativity will bereshaped into a conceptual framework, inviting change leaders and OD consultants to becomefully aware of, and reconsider, the relevance and fitness of their planned interventions, in thelight of the possibility or even desirability of contributing to sustainably healthy, flourishingorganizations. Three subsequent studies attempt to bring such a framework into existence.First: extensive exploration of generativity across all domains where it resides, and re-formingits possible meanings. Second, in order to test and adjust the newborn conceptual framework:action survey on the generativity of multiple AI Summit interventions. Third: process analysisof the reach and impact of a longitudinal AI learning intervention in The Hague City Council,aiming for further understanding of generativity as a quality of sustainable interventions.Three building blocks of a hopefully convincing conceptual framework Generativity: for ODpractitioners a welcome additional instrument; within organization studies a stepping stone forfurther research into lasting OD strategies.
