Sleep Medicine Program Manager
- Increased access to PAP clinic by 26% with FTE neutral redesign of operations- Lead a VISN 23 Strategic Initiative to expand Sleep Medicine Tele-health to stations without access to Sleep Medicine providersAs the Manager of the Sleep Medicine Program, I oversee the clinical responsibilities of Polysomnographic Technologists, Respiratory Therapists, and Registered nurses who assist in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disordered breathing, hypersomnia, behavioral sleep disorders, circadian rhythm disorders, and insomnia. Administratively, I oversee day-to-day operations while expanding the services the Sleep Program offers and partnering with other facilities within VISN 23 to offer Sleep Services in new regions through telehealth services including tele-polysomnography.
Clinic Supervisor - Neurology, Sleep Medicine, Eeg, Emg, Tbi, Pm&R, And Integrative Health
My responsibilities as Clinic Supervisor included overseeing the day-to-day operations of multiple specialty clinics and labs related to the neurosciences. I led a team including Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants, Polysomnographic Technologists, Electroneurodiagnostic Technologists, Patient Services Coordinators, and Developmental Optometry Technicians.
Sleep Center Supervisor
In my role as Supervisor of the Sleep Center, I lead both the Sleep Clinic and Sleep Laboratory administratively, and the Sleep Laboratory clinically. • Through implementation of the Daily Management System from the Lean department and daily huddles, I engaged the staff of each department in process improvement of the other. As a result we continue to increase bed utilization, share resources, and partner in patient experience. • I’ve led the staff of both departments, in kaizen spirit, to work together on a process they refer to as “crossover.” In brief, if the process is successful, the patients who have sleep studies in the Sleep Laboratory are able to have a results appointment in the Sleep Clinic within 2 hours of waking up. The result of this process improvement was a reduction in the 3rd next available appointment by 26 days, and a slot utilization of >100% for our physicians. • In collaboration with multiple IT teams, Revenue Cycle, and the Informatics team I led the Sleep Clinic and Sleep Lab in a redesign of clinical documentation, orders, workflow, and charging that resulted in an increase in quality of care, communication between ordering providers and sleep technologists, documentation, and a reduction in processing and missed charges.
Sleep Laboratory Supervisor
As Supervisor of the Sleep Laboratory, I retained my responsibilities as Sleep Laboratory Coordinator with the addition of leading process improvement, performance management, business growth, and financial vitality.• I was very fortunate to be selected as a member of the 2016 cohort of the Emerging Leaders Program. During my time in the program I received training on change management, Lean management principles/tools, and many other topics essential to successful leadership in a health care setting. • Utilized the A3 problem solving tool and Lean values to approach outdated processes and eliminate multiple wastes; most significantly excess processing and unutilized resources. • By redesigning the process for performing polysomnography on high acuity and high need patients I led the team to secure ~$180,000 in otherwise uncaptured charges within a 6 month period.
Sleep Laboratory Coordinator
As Coordinator, I oversaw the day-to-day operations of the Sleep Laboratory, supported clinical direction, technologist education, and inventory/supply chain.• By restructuring staffing and scheduling I was able to increase access by 18.75% without additional FTE or expense. This equates to as much $24,000 in additional charges per week.• Developed a multidisciplinary Policy and Procedure Committee to update and maintain protocols. This has shown to improve the quality of care in the Sleep Laboratory as well as clarity of orders by providers. • Through negotiation with vendors and partnership with supply chain I replaced outdated PAP devices in the Sleep Laboratory with state-of-the-art devices at far less cost than the original purchase.
Lead Polysomnographic Technologist
In my first formal role in health care leadership, I performed polysomnography (sleep studies) alongside other polysomnographic technologists while also coordinating operations on a day-to-day basis. My duties included the following: • Assisting in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders• Management of clinic referrals and lab orders• Providing direct patient care involving performing PSG, titration of PAP, blood draws, analysis of blood gases• Patient education of sleep disorders, diagnostic testing, and therapies.• Inventory Management / Supply Chain• Assisting in the hiring of new employees and annual review of performance• Night Shift Supervision and team building across multiple shifts• Clinical Preceptorships
