As an intern for FoodChain, a non-profit that provides education and demonstration of sustainable food production, I worked on initiating a vertical aeroponic rooftop garden. This internship required independent judgement in helping to research, design, and assemble the garden. As part of this position, I utilized Google SketchUp to design a to-scale, 3D visual model of the rooftop garden, advertised and helped recruit volunteers for a community build day using poster design on Canva, and created workstation “lesson plans” to aid in teaching volunteers how to help assemble the vertical grow towers.

Through working as a lab assistant in the Chemistry Department, I was able to fine tune my lab skills. I helped prepare, set up, and maintain general chemistry laboratory experiments. I completed regular safety checks in each lab, and prepared standard solutions for various labs. Additionally, I helped organize and helped maintain the order of the chemistry stockroom and chemical inventory.

As a part of the Research in Science and Engineering (RiSE) Program, I conducted research on the effects of methionine restriction on hepatic stress in mice under the direction of Dr. Tracy Anthony and Dr. Ashley Pettit. MY role in this project was to aid in the lab work of prepping mice tissues under liquid nitrogen and conducted Western Blots on these tissues. Additionally, I used Excel and Statistica to conduct statistical analysis on our findings. Through Prism GraphPad, I expressed the final data through graphs. For the summation of the program, I presented both orally and via a poster presentation on my work. I then went on to the American Chemical Society Conference to present my work in San Fransisco.

As part of the Collaborative Undergraduate Research in Energy (CURE) Program, I conducted research in bacterial genomics under the direction of Dr. Jeffery Blanchard. The newly discovered species, C. phytofermentans was found to naturally produce ethanol for use in biofuels. My role in the project was to utilize Python programming to aid in determining the probably function of gene 3611. To culminate the end of the program, I worked alongside another student researcher studying C. phytofermentans, to present our findings at a poster research symposium.
