One of the most important steps when creating something new for kids is getting them to try it out, and that is what I do. Playtesting is about bringing your audience into your process - take your property to them, watch what they do with it, and write up a report about it.

Kids Media Centre

Through the kidsmediacentre, a child-focused research arm of ARIC (The Applied Research and Innovation Centre), I have had the opportunity to consult on an OMDC funded project linked to the best practices in digital media for a youth audience. This involved evaluating properties based on their privatization, monetization and marketing strategies and creating a final document to encourage a level of excellence for youth-directed digital media in Ontario. This includes apps, games, eBooks, websites, virtual worlds and transmedia properties.

The Children's Entertainment: Writing, Production and Management Program at Centennial College is a Post Graduate Certificate program that runs for three semesters, including an internship placement during the final semester. Throughout the course, we cover everything from script writing, camera work, business management, licensing and marketing, book publishing, integrated digital media, video editing and television development and production.

As the internship component for my post-graduate, I opted to work in the interactive department at Corus Entertainment. There, I had the opportunity to upgrade my skills in the industry by participating in the writing of funding documents, evaluating properties for marketing analysis, QA testing and market research. I have been able to provide recommendations regarding current and future interactive properties.

Every summer and March Break for the last 10 years, I have been the drama instructor/program coordinator at Musical Theatre Camp with the City of Toronto. Along with the dance and music instructors, we were responsible for creating and directing a musical performance with children ages 6-12. The catch, we had two weeks to do so.
