Music has always been a key to every chapter of book. In my current chapter, it is ran by Beyonce and her lyric, “I dream it, I work hard, I grind 'til I own it.” My career map has many stops, including some U-turns, but I wouldn’t have changed anything about that journey. It is because of that journey I can say that I am skilled in authentic relationship building, intentional community engagement, and identifying opportunities to grow equitable practices. I take a lot of pride in building collaborative partnerships within culturally diverse communities while focusing on the strengths of those who live in those communities. It all started with another lyric reference in 2006. I was twenty-one and I had to write an essay as part of my application for Public Allies Arizona. At that time Aesop Rock was spitting my truth, “You can dream a little dream or you can live a little dream I'd rather live it 'cause dreamers always chase but never get it.” I was feeling stuck in my dreams but didn’t know how to take actions.I felt I “should have” gone straight to a 4-year college after high school, but instead I tried culinary school, community college, then I just got a custom service job. I was lost. I kept looking for all the signs, and that is when a mentor introduced me to national service as an option to get on a career path.Looking back, swearing in as a Public Ally AmeriCorps member, I launched into roles that gave me foundations in coaching, values-based leadership, connecting to community, and fighting for the most marginalized. Eventually, I went to Arizona State University (ASU) for a Bachelor’s degree in Justice Studies with a focus on LGBTQ+ Studies. Having that piece of paper opened many doors, but truthfully it was the professional experiences I had from working from the time I was a teen and Public Allies that prepared me for new adventures, including finding new adventures when I moved to Tucson from Glendale, AZ. While living in Tucson I found myself ready to jump into community work, I started working at a nonprofit, and eventually when I found myself back to AmeriCorps. I had a new family and I was ready for the next big thing. I got my Master’s degree in Social Justice and Community Organizing as well as a new position that includes community engagement and services for the LGBTQ+ community in Southern Arizona. It has been a great time building these skills and experiences, and the map keeps growing. What will be the next chapter?
