I am the Security manager for the ACS data center location in Hillsboro, OR. I manage a small staff in the US, plus a team of offshore resources located in Malaysia and India. Services and technologies that we support or engineer include: McAfee VirusScan, McAfee AntiSpyware, McAfee SiteAdvisor, McAfee GroupShield, McAfee HIPS, McAfee Endpoint Encryption, McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator, Snort IDS, Microsoft ISA, Critical Watch vulnerability assessments scans, Cisco ScanSafe, OpenDNS/Umbrella, a variety of custom developed network security compliance scanners, and various security-related audit, compliance and platform hardening services, as well as CERT support - all for multiple customers, some local, some multi-national. Also have responsibilities for SOX, PCI and ISO 20000 certfication.My team has led or integrated operational and engineering support across the following technical towers: data center operations, NetApp and EMC storage, Unix, WinTel server, WinTel desktop, network, enterprise backup and recovery (EBR).My team supports processes and business operations across the following functional areas: change management, release management, incident management, service level agreements (SLA), monthly KPIs/metrics, vendor management, CMDB, service requests.Management activities include team training, planning and leadership. Responsibilities also cover customer liaison and relationship management, strategic road-maps, project management, resource planning, compliance monitoring and governance, cost modelling, and process development.

I spend a lot of my bandwidth managing cross-departmental and cross-customer IT projects. The project teams are often composed of developers and engineers from 3 or more separate organizations. I have a very long and rich history of software engineering, systems engineering, configuration management, customer relationship management and vendor managment. I like to think of how I work in classic architectural terms: an architect is not expected to be a subject matter expert in all disciplines. An architect needs to have a broad understanding of many technologies, maintain relationships with engineering resources, and decompose a project or initiative into smaller, discreet units of work. Some units will be purely technical, while others will be organizational or process oriented.

I moved into the Client Engineering organization (platform engineering focussed on Windows desktops) as a senior engineer to take on the role of project manager for a very important, highly visible project. I also assumed the lead position for the entire team. Later, I was promoted to supervisor of the department.The project I led was to develop and deploy a global desktop management technology (we weren't allowed to use SMS at that time) for a customer with locations in 50 different countries world-wide. I was also one of 3 principal engineers/architects on the project. The engineering, development and deployment went very well, and was a major success both for the team, for our customer, and for my company.During this time I also supersived the rest of the group, project managed a wide variety of endeavors, maintained customer SLA's, gave employee performance reviews, submitted business proposals and ROI studies, assisted with budget processes and occasionally wrote code.
