Chris Frank is a full-stack software engineer and design technologist proficient in Python, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, and HTML/CSS. He’s currently a Staff Engineer at The New York Times, where he works as the tech lead of the team building NYT’s photo publishing systems.Some recent challenges at The Times include real-time NLP-based image search across a petabyte-scale dataset; a multi-region image ingestion pipeline that self-heals from many kinds of infrastructure failure; and a React-based design system and component library used by teams throughout the company. He also serves on the Architecture Review Board, where he helps teams think about how their architectures fit into the broader organization.Before joining The Times, Chris worked for 10+ years across the public and private sectors, with clients like Nike, Tumblr, and the Olympic Games. Chris was also first a Developer and then the Director of Software Engineering at The Future Project, a 501(c)(3) working with 30,000 high school students across 11 cities.In the open source community, Chris enjoys learning from and collaborating with engineers across the globe.Chris holds a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from NYU with a minor in math. Outside of software, he is passionate about ethics, music, and food.
