In August 2019, Portent's founder exited the business and I stepped in to lead the agency. My role as the head of the agency focused on four areas:- Lead Generation and Business Development—overseeing lead generation strategy and the business development pipeline (new business, renewal business, upsell business) - Service Fulfillment—ensuring the agency team was providing the right services at the right time with high-quality work. - Talent Acquisition and Retention—focusing on cultivating a great environment and culture to attract and retain a thriving team of ~45 digital marketers. - Ownership of the Agency P&L—growing a thriving agency that effectively balanced quality service fulfillment, strong culture, work/life balance, and healthy margins.During my time in this role, Portent experienced its best financial year ever in 2020 and then again in 2021. Over my three years in this role, the agency's annual revenue grew 26% and gross profit increased 61% during that same time period. I'm proud of the work we delivered to our clients, the thriving agency culture, and the financial health of the agency that was built during my time leading the organization.

My role as Vice President, Client Solutions focused on three core areas of the agency:- Ownership of the agency's service suite—working with leaders to define what services the agency offered and how we fulfilled those services.- Selling services—partnering with business development team members to identify prospects, pitch services, negotiate SOWs, close business, and onboard new clients. - Building the team—cultivating a team of ~45 functional digital marketers, ready to fulfill signed SOWs for digital marketing service to clients across B2B and B2C verticals. Portent's service suite spanned 12 digital marketing channels and elements, including Front-End Development, Back-End Development, Analytics, Conversion Rate Optimization, Content Strategy, Content Production, Paid Search, Programmatic Advertising, Social, Influencer Marketing, Technical SEO, and Linkbuilding.

In 2012, I was presented an opportunity to build a program from the ground up, focused on servicing SMBs with a limited budget in need of quality digital marketing expertise. Through this role, I learned for the first time and honed my skills around:- Service definition—creating digital marketing services catering to SMBs with limited resources.- Lead generation—strategizing and executing campaigns to attract leads and potential clients. - Sales—speaking with prospective clients, pitching, negotiating, and closing SOWs.- Service fulfillment and client relationship management—fulfilling signed SOWs, working directly with clients to provide digital marketing campaign execution, consulting, and reporting.- Hiring and Personnel Management—building a small team of entry-level marketers through hiring, onboarding, training, and ongoing coaching to fulfill a growing client list. - Business Unit P&L Management—tracking all revenue and expenses through the program on a monthly basis, reporting to executive leadership along the way.Portent's SMB Program is still a thriving business unit within the agency. The agency has serviced hundreds of SMBs, generated millions in revenue for the agency, and given many marketers their first job in an agency environment.
