As the Vice President of Infrastructure, Cloud & Data Platforms at Starbucks I led a team of 200+ developers, engineers, administrators, operators, and product managers who designed, built, deployed, and managed technology that touches every aspect of the global Starbucks business. The team covers four major functional areas:- Data Center and Cloud Hosting Services - engineering and operations for four private data center locations (US & CN) and cloud provider integration. Covers servers, virtualization, storage, networking, global interconnectivity, cloud integration, cloud subscription management and consulting, and business management of cloud billing and vendors.- Manufacturing, Distribution, and Office Infrastructure Services - engineering and operations for all technology infrastructure in Starbucks roasting plants, roasteries, distribution centers, and corporate office locations. Covers local and wide-area networking, Wi-Fi, internet access, servers, virtualization, storage, voice services, and technology facilities engineering (HVAC, power distribution).- Enterprise Data Analytics Platform and Deep Brew/AIReserve - engineering, development, and operation of the Starbucks EDAP and Deep Brew/AIReserve MLOps platforms and data ingestion pipelines. These platforms power the data analytics and AI engines used across the Starbucks enterprise to drive revenue generation, customer and partner engagement, and supply chain excellence.- Starbucks Data Exchange Platforms - engineering, development, and operation of the Starbucks Store Location, Customer, and Commerce Data Exchange (DX) platforms. These DX platforms provide trusted source-of-truth and source-of-record data backbones for critical revenue-generating and operational systems, leveraging modern API-driven and cloud-hosted technology.

As the director of the Infrastructure Services team at Starbucks I led a highly talented team of engineers, administrators, and operators who managed foundational technology in support of the Starbucks global business. My responsibilities included providing core technology infrastructure services and technology operations, financial management, and strategic technology alignment to deliver on business initiatives.Key Functions:- Leadership of globally-engaged infrastructure and engineering organizations that manage core technology services such as self-service compute, virtualization, data storage, data network, telecommunications, and infrastructure provisioning.- Management of annual operating budgets in excess of $30mm, with a consistent record of identifying opportunities to reduce costs.- Vendor and contract management with an emphasis on delivery performance, total value, and cost predictability.- Accountability for technology infrastructure and associated assets globally across sites ranging in size from small offices to enterprise data centers.- Implementation of internal Infrastructure as a Service through capacity acquisition standardization and provisioning automation.- Integration of agile-methodologies to manage intake and work processes to streamline delivery and customer interaction.

Led varied and far-ranging technology initiatives in the manufacturing, security, identity, and infrastructure areas of the Starbucks business. Applied solid architectural principles and methods from conceptual design and logical architecture to detailed implementation and execution. Helped to co-found and participated in the Starbucks Enterprise Architecture Review Board process. Broadly recognized within the organization as a forward-thinking and thorough technology architect.

Infrastructure and Software Engineer at the Open Source technology startupSourceLabs. This role had requirements in both core infrastructure engineering aswell as software engineering. In addition to creating a standardized operatingenvironment for rapid certification testing of Open Source products, I also providedbug-fix triage and support for the Apache Tomcat Java web application container.

Led the Kernel and OS Engineering team in the Amazon Website Hosting group. The Kernel and OS Engineering team was responsible for the architectural direction of the amazon.com server infrastructure platform, including key areas such as performance tuning, fleet-wide configuration management, authentication and security posture, definition of standard service offerings, and custom engineered solutions. Most of the tasks undertaken by this team involved significant process automation and dealt with problems on an extremely large scale.

Represented Delta Technology's Engineering portfolio as a member of the Delta Technology/Delta Air Lines Enterprise Architecture group, reporting to the Vice President of Engineering. Oversaw significant technology projects within the Engineering organization and provided input and technical guidance to other Principals within the Enterprise Architecture group. Led strategic research initiatives and produced architectural recommendations and white papers. Briefed Delta Air Lines and Delta Technology executive leadership on technology issues as needed.

Managed Harland’s Network Services group. This group had responsibility for the administration and coordination of server platforms, messaging, network, and desk- side support at the Harland corporate offices. Managed tactical planning and implementation and developed roadmaps and project plans for the implementation of strategic technology initiatives. Evaluated technology trends and assessed applicability of technologies as related to the company’s business requirements.
