I have had a wide variety of occupations which always seem to morph naturally. I was a respiratory therapist (RT) right out of Community College. Spent 2 years at St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, another two years in a hospital 20 mi. N of Detroit and then moved to Petoskey to take a position at a North Central Michigan College teaching lab and clinical skills to RT students. I received a BS and an MS at Ferris while teaching and eventually became director and professor of the Respiratory Care Program at NCMC. Once, I was qualified to teach, Master's in hand, the college closed the program and I was laid-off. Attending a Leadership Development Program the summer of my exit from NCMC, led to an Internship at Grand Rapids Community College. My mentor Till Peters, Dean of Occupational Education taught me much about leadership, Occ Ed, and writing in a style that would prevent a barrage of red ink on my draft reports. The internship ended, but shortly after I was hired to do a joint Environmental Scanning in Occupation Education Project for MSU/GRJC funded by the Kellogg Foundation. This was my introduction to the world of futures research and instilled in me the importance of being "anticipatory" rather than reactionary, in life and in work. The project increased general interest in futuring, and produced a very long manual w/ith a very long name which found its way to the ERIC data base sans my name. Only a temporary disappointment, much like my lay-off, six mos. later I applied for a research position at what is now GRCC. As the only candidate who possessed experience in Occ Ed & could define "environmental scanning," I was hired as the 3rd person in a new and growing department called Institutional Research. I am in my 23rd yr at GRCC. First, living in Allendale for 7 years, I then moved my family to Brutus, MI, to become the college's first telecommuter.
