Tertl Consulting provides software product strategy, design and production for innovators in business, health, education, and research. Examples: UMass Medical School (citizen science website); University of Vermont Medical School (“breath games” for asthma patients); the startup storeyourtires.com (a complete business logistics system); Vanderbilt University (classroom research data collection tool); Aprexis, Inc. (product design for medication therapy management system).Tertl Educational R&D develops new interfaces, tools, games and media to make powerful ideas visible, playable, constructible and learnable. From 2007-11 we focused on mathematics and computing, winning over $2M in multiple R&D grant awards. Tertl's current educational focus is early reading. With Pioneer Valley Books, we conceived and wrote the winning proposal for an NSF-funded Small Business Innovation Research Phase I award for intelligent tutoring in early reading. Tertl is also creating Letterfinger™, an interface for sounding out words with touch-based control of enunciation pacing (pat. pending).

• Principal Investigator of the NSF-funded project Foundational Tools for Data Literacy which produced the classroom data tool InspireData. • Prototyped new approaches to computer-based performance assessment of data literacy.

Research on modeling emergent behavior and complex systems. Dissertation research on new paradigms for novice programming in real-time domains such as games and robotics. Dissertation title: Real-time programming and the big ideas of data literacy.

• Led an extended program of work on visual data tools for data analysis (Tabletop, Tabletop Jr.) in the classroom, including prototyping, clinical piloting and research, classroom research, teacher development, curriculum development, commercial production and dissemination. • Created and designed (with Scot Osterweil) software games emphasizing ideas of discrete mathematics, especially Logical Journey of the Zoombinis.

Developed and taught "Introduction to Computing" (1985,86,87), "Smalltalk and Object-oriented Programming" (1986), "Computers in Society" (writing-intensive seminar, 1988, 89, 90, 91, 92).

Research on the teaching and learning of computer programming, and on online teacher communities. Designer and author of the Common Ground computer conferencing system.
